Baghdad / Obelisk: The Iraqi judiciary moved, on Monday, January 2, 2023, to deal with the file of diplomatic passports, after popular and political circles were buzzing with calls for an end to this disregard for Iraqi diplomacy.
The Public Prosecution Service directed the Third Karkh Investigation Court to take legal measures in light of a letter sent by an Iraqi deputy to the agency, regarding the Minister of Foreign Affairs' violation of the House of Representatives law and refraining from answering a parliamentary inquiry regarding diplomatic passports.
And a document showed that the Public Prosecution Service referred a request to the Third Karkh Investigation Court, issued by a female deputy, to take legal measures against the Minister of Foreign Affairs for violating the law of the House of Representatives and its formations, after he refused to answer and take the necessary measures regarding diplomatic passports granted to those who are not eligible, according to Abdul Wahed’s description.
The Integrity Committee filed a complaint against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for not providing it with a list of diplomatic passport holders.
Iraqi law provides for the granting of diplomatic passports to the presidents of the republic, government, parliament, and members of parliament, in addition to the president of the Supreme Judicial Council, presidents of the Kurdistan region, and the region’s cabinet, in addition to those with special grades working in the state, with exceptions approved exclusively by the foreign minister or prime minister.
It seems that the diplomatic passport has become easy to obtain for those who have relations with influential personalities in the country.
The independent politician, Saad Al-Muttalbi, called for the necessity of immediately reviewing the application of the mechanism for granting the diplomatic passport, which is in force internationally, as well as the service passport, indicating that the large number of grants has made the diplomatic passport lose its value.
Simultaneously, the representative of the State of Law, Alia Nassif, revealed that the diplomatic passport was circulated in social salons, stressing that its price reaches about five thousand dollars.
The obelisk monitored calls for the foreign minister to open the file and follow it up, because it is an insult to the state and the Iraqis.
The Iraqi diplomatic passport is circulated in social salons, among fascists, merchants, and officials' relatives, according to eyewitnesses.
The announcement by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior had sparked widespread controversy with its announcement of the issuance of more than 4,000 diplomatic passports within one year.
Al-Muttalbi said in a statement that the phenomenon of issuing diplomatic passports outside international controls has lost the value of the diplomatic passport for Iraq.
A member of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, Amer Al-Fayez, criticized the granting of diplomatic passports to those who are not eligible.
Political analyst Ali Mared al-Asadi described what is happening as silent corruption.
The Iraqi researcher residing in London, Adnan Abu Zaid, confirms that the Iraqi passport is not respected among the countries of the European Union and looks at its holder with an eye of inferiority, indicating that he knows people who were granted diplomatic passports while they are in Europe absurdly, without having a position or mission in Iraq, but rather The basis of relationships and nepotism.
