    Baghdad Today - Sulaymaniyah
Today, Saturday (September 14, 2024), Khalid Haider, Professor of Economics at the University of Sulaimani, commented on the economic importance of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to the Kurdistan Region.
Haidar said in an interview with Baghdad Today that "the tension between the Kurdistan Region and Iran has been eased, after the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to the region, and thus this calm will help improve relations."
He added, "Approximately one-third of Iranian exports are the share of the Kurdistan Region, and the region is a popular market for Iranian goods, and Kurdistan is of great importance to Tehran."
Haider pointed out that, "Iran seeks to pay attention to this aspect, and economic relations can develop, and the volume of trade exchange will increase with Iraq and the region, and various goods and commodities will be provided, and this represents great importance, and satisfies local demand with regard to the region, especially for goods that are not produced within Kurdistan."
In the first visit of an Iranian president to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Erbil on Thursday (September 12, 2024), on the second leg of his visit to Iraq, where he met with Kurdish leaders, including the President of the Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
Zeshkian also met with representatives of Kurdish parties and minorities, and held a private meeting with Massoud Barzani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party.
"During the meeting, emphasis was placed on coordination and strengthening relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the political, economic and cultural fields," the headquarters of Masoud Barzani said in an official statement after the meeting with Pezeshkian. The statement also said that an official invitation was extended to President Masoud Barzani to visit Iran.
Barzani's invitation to visit Iran has become a matter of great interest to the Kurdish side, especially since Massoud Barzani has not visited Iran for more than 12 years, as his last visit to the neighboring country was in 2011.
In a joint press conference with the President of the Region, Nechirvan Barzani, Bazeshkian said, "We discussed strengthening relations with the officials of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and we will overcome the problems that existed between us, God willing."
It is noteworthy that the tension in the relationship between the two parties had reached unprecedented levels after Iran bombed sites inside Erbil with ballistic missiles on January 11, under the pretext that they were sites belonging to the Israeli Mossad, which was denied by the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the central government in Baghdad.
Observers expect this visit to restore the relationship between Tehran and Erbil to its former state of friendship and cooperation before the region was targeted.
This is what the region hopes for after Nechirvan Barzani pointed this out in the presence of Pezeshkian when he spoke to reporters, saying, “The Iranian president’s visit was historic, and we want to improve our relations in all aspects.”
He also added, "The arrival of the Iranian president as the first president of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a historic matter for us by all standards. We discussed developing relations with the president, especially security issues."
Barzani sent reassuring messages to the Iranian side when he said, "We will not accept the use of the territory of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq against the Islamic Republic of Iran in any way." Iran has long accused the region of harboring Iranian Kurdish opposition groups that carry out attacks against it from the region's territory.
The Iranian President concluded his visit to the region with a visit to the city of Sulaymaniyah and a meeting with the leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan to emphasize Iran's special relations with the Patriotic Union, the rival of the Democratic Party in Kurdistan.
