{Economic: Al Furat News} The Algerian state-owned electricity and gas company "Sonelgaz" announced the export of important electrical equipment to Iraq, starting from its factory in the east of the country, which was established in partnership with the American company "General Electric", after supplying the Tunisian market with electricity throughout last summer, and also pumping 1000 megawatts urgently into the Tunisian electricity grid a few days ago, following a malfunction that affected one of the production stations.

In this context, the Algerian state-owned company Sonelgaz stated in a statement that it "has begun the process of exporting important electrical equipment to the State of Iraq," noting that the process comes within the framework of the group's success in "activating important commercial partnerships at the local and international levels." The statement issued on Saturday indicated that the export process ceremony took place yesterday at the General Algeria Company factory known as "Electric Algeria Turbine" (GEAT)" in the state of Batna, eastern Algeria, which is a joint-stock company between "Sonelgaz" and General Electric (GE). Under the process, a significant shipment of electrical equipment will be exported to the Iraqi company "Taurus Arm For Power Generation Oil Trading and Transportation Ltd."
According to the Sonelgaz Group, the deal involves exporting a 300 MW H53 and 0H5 gas turbine generator, in addition to ancillary equipment, without disclosing the financial value of the deal. The Algerian company stressed that "this operation comes within the framework of implementing the instructions of the country's highest authorities, aiming to gradually move away from dependence on hydrocarbons, by diversifying economic and commercial activities and enhancing the local product." Algeria's economy suffers from excessive dependence on oil and gas revenues, which represent about 90% of the country's foreign exchange revenues. Since President Abdelmadjid Tebboune took office at the end of 2019, the government has launched plans to boost non-oil exports, which reached $7 billion in 2022, the highest figure in the country’s history since its independence from France in 1962, before falling to $5 billion at the end of 2023.
In this context, Sonelgaz, through its industrial arm, the Algerian Company for Electrical and Gas Industries (SAPEG), exported a shipment of electrical equipment to Tunisia on Saturday, including various types of spare parts for electronic electricity meters.

This comes days after Sonelgaz supplied the Tunisian grid with 1,000 megawatts, helping to keep key facilities in its eastern neighbor operating following a power plant failure with a capacity of 400 megawatts. According to a statement by Sonelgaz at the time, the operation “came in implementation of the directives of the country’s highest authority regarding strengthening cooperation ties with Tunisia and its commitment to continue supplying it with energy,” and that “Sonelgaz was able to supply the Tunisian grid with 1,000 megawatts of electricity in record time.”
During peak electricity consumption last summer, which coincided with repeated heat waves, Algeria avoided power cuts for more than 11 million people, thanks to a surplus production of more than 6,000 megawatts per day, and maintained daily exports to Tunisia of more than 500 megawatts. Algeria’s electricity production currently exceeds 26,000 megawatts per day, while the highest peak consumption in the history of the Arab country did not reach 20,000 megawatts.
Last summer, the American group "General Electric Vernova", listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol GEV, announced that it had received a new order from the Algerian state-owned electricity and gas company "Sonelgaz" to strengthen the electricity sector in the country, by supplying high-voltage equipment and automatic control equipment and solutions in the network through 134 substations by 2028, which are being manufactured in the Batna province in the east of the country.
Years ago, Sonelgaz established a factory in the eastern province of Batna, known as the “General Electric Turbine Factory,” which contains four production units.
The first unit is dedicated to natural gas turbines (100-300 MW), the second produces steam turbines (50-160 MW), the third unit produces electric generators that are connected to the turbines to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, and the fourth and final unit produces the turbine control systems manufactured in the first and second units (gas and steam turbines).
