Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]Independent MP Kazem Al-Fayyadh called, on Monday, for the necessity of reviewing the file of land distribution to officials in the Iraqi state.[/rtl]
[rtl]Al-Fayadh said in an interview followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", "The distribution of lands to officials in the Iraqi state is a file surrounded by many suspicions, especially since there are lands distributed in distinguished areas and at low prices, although their real price exceeds that by a lot."[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "Some lands were distributed during previous governments with the aim of gaining the loyalty of some officials, and this file must be investigated by the competent oversight authorities, and they must take a position to prevent such violations and exploitation of the position for personal and political benefits."[/rtl]
[rtl]Every now and then, state officials, including ministers, representatives, and general managers, are granted plots of land in the capital, Baghdad, or the governorates, often in distinguished areas, and some of them reach an area of 600 square meters.[/rtl]
[rtl]In the past years, representatives revealed the distribution of nearly 20,000 housing units to officials, ministers, and representatives for small sums in the Green Zone and in the areas of Mansour, Qadisiyah, Yarmouk, Kadhimiya, Atifiyah, and others.[/rtl]
[rtl]It is noteworthy that the defunct regime, during its rule from 1968 to 2003, used most of the lands overlooking the Tigris River in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as headquarters for the security services and the government, in addition to building palaces and rest houses overlooking the river. These headquarters extend from the Kadhimiya area to Al-Adhamiya to the Karrada area and Abu Nawas Street, which is considered one of the upscale areas in Baghdad, where the palaces and most of the government headquarters were built. After April 2003, successive Iraqi governments kept these headquarters, which made the banks of the Tigris River in Baghdad a monopoly for the Iraqi authorities and officials for nearly 40 years.[/rtl]
