Expected amendments to the Diplomatic Passport Law

The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee defended the amendments submitted to the Diplomatic Passport Law, stressing that the amendment came against the backdrop of controversial issues.
Committee member Mohammed Al-Shammari told Al-Sabah: The committee is discussing important laws, including amending the Diplomatic Passport Law, the Intelligence Service, and the Popular Mobilization Forces, noting that these discussions are part of the committee's efforts to update and organize laws related to security and defense.
He added that some paragraphs of the Diplomatic Passport Law were amended to facilitate procedures, explaining that the amendment came after accusations against the Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs of granting diplomatic passports without justification, but after investigating the truth, it became clear that they were baseless. Al-Shammari confirmed that the number of diplomatic passports granted amounted to only 1,600 passports, indicating that the numbers circulating in the media and social networking sites are inaccurate.
He added that granting diplomatic passports to key figures who have served the country for life includes their family members, which is a natural thing that does not lead to an increase in the number of passports granted.
Al-Shammari noted that the diplomatic passport is withdrawn from family members when the individual reaches the age of 24 and is converted into a regular passport, while it remains for the children and wife, noting that voting on the law depends on the approval of the members of parliament and the extent of their conviction in it.
