The Union of Islamic Scholars in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday rejected the inclusion of the draft amendment to the Iraqi Personal Status Law on the parliament’s agenda for Sunday’s session.
The union said in a statement that regarding the proposed draft amendment to the Iraqi Personal Status Law that is being tried to pass in the Iraqi parliament these days, it was placed on the parliament’s agenda twice for the purpose of reading and approving it, which created an uproar in the Iraqi street between supporters and opponents.
The statement quoted the spokesman for the Union of Muslim Scholars, Mullah Abdullah Shirkawi, as saying: “The Union of Muslim Scholars in Kurdistan attaches great importance to all matters of a religious nature and related to personal and family aspects.”
He added, “After reviewing the issue of amending this law and studying the proposed articles for amendment, we see that the Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959 in force, which is taken from Islamic law, has been able to organize matters related to the family, and has been able to achieve balance and justice among the Iraqi components, regardless of their sects, nationalities, and cultures, as it deals with citizens as a civil law, and has become a source of societal security and the maintenance of family ties.”
He considered that “there is no need to amend these articles, and no legal loophole has occurred that requires amending this law. From this standpoint, we see that this proposed project does not serve society or the family, but rather has negative consequences for Iraq and Kurdistan, and it also has other purposes. Based on the above, we are not in favor of the proposed amendment to the Personal Status Law, and we demand that the relevant authorities do what is required out of a sense of responsibility.”
