    Economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi revealed, today, Monday (September 16, 2024), that the tax on the social networking application "Facebook" will be 15 percent in Iraq.
    Al-Marsoumi wrote in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Facebook tax will be 15 % in Iraq," noting that "the government is the one that will impose the tax due to the financial crisis resulting from the decline in oil prices."
    The General Tax Authority announced, on Friday (March 15, 2024), a government move to collect taxes from 85 new entities that were not previously included, including taxi companies, social media ads, celebrities, hotels and restaurants.
    The head of the General Tax Authority, Ali Waad Allawi, said in a statement to the official news agency, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the authority added fees to some companies that were not subject to it and that have (taxi) applications such as airport taxi, Careem taxi, and Play taxi, and the rest of the car rental companies. This sector was not subject to the tax, and we obtained the approval of the Prime Minister to subject them to the tax at a rate of 15 percent."
    He added, "We are also studying subjecting advertisements on social media sites, including Facebook advertisements, to a 30% tax, similar to other countries, without imposing any additional fees on Iraqi advertisers."
    He added, "There is also a decision to impose taxes on advertisements for TikTokers, bloggers, YouTubers, and some celebrities who have followers. The decision was made by the Council of Ministers and was issued in this regard. Now we are looking for a mechanism to implement these taxes compared to neighboring countries."
    He stressed that "there will be a tax platform to collect these taxes, which include, as we mentioned, taxi companies, restaurants, hotels, and social media advertisements, and their combined number reaches 85 entities that were not subject to taxes. According to an initial, unofficial study, their tax amounts could reach $5 million per month."
