Despite the fact that Iraq and Turkey have previously signed many security and military agreements, the security situation between the two countries is still deteriorating due to what Turkey is doing in northern Iraq, which raises questions about the seriousness of these agreements and the extent of Turkey's commitment to them.
Security tensions between Iraq and Turkey are increasing significantly, and it is clear that the recent security agreement did not lead to a tangible improvement in the security situation. On the contrary, Turkish violations on Iraqi territory have escalated, indicating that the security agreements concluded have not gone beyond being ink on paper.
The common border between Iraq and Turkey is witnessing a continuous military escalation, as Turkish forces carry out repeated military operations inside Iraqi territory, but it is clear that these operations have gone beyond combating terrorism to become a blatant violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
Speaking about this file, the Sadiqoun parliamentary bloc announced that it will host the Iraqi Minister of Defense, Thabet Al-Abbasi, in the coming few days in parliament, against the backdrop of his signing a security memorandum of understanding between Baghdad and Ankara that allows Turkish forces to penetrate Iraqi territory under the pretext of pursuing elements of the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
The bloc’s representative, Ahmed Al-Moussawi, confirmed that the Iraqi government was aware of and approved of this memorandum, noting that the Minister of Defense is part of the government.
Al-Moussawi pointed out that “the members of parliament were not aware of its details,” expressing his dissatisfaction that “its provisions did not include the withdrawal of Turkish forces and preventing them from violating Iraqi sovereignty, which is what the agreement should have included.”
In addition, former MP Hassan Faddam called on the Iraqi government to set conditions for passing the security agreement with Turkey, most notably amending it to ensure the country’s sovereignty.
Faddam said in a statement, “There are many objections to many points regarding the security agreement,” indicating that “Iraq needs such agreements on the condition that all Turkish forces are removed from northern Iraq.”
He added, "The Kurdistan government bears responsibility for all violations that occurred in the northern provinces, as it is primarily responsible for protecting the borders between the two countries," noting that "the agreement with Turkey is very necessary, but it must not affect Iraqi sovereignty."
He stresses the "necessity for there to be amendments to this agreement by the government, since what is happening in the north falls within the occupation of part of Iraqi territory."
The signing of this memorandum has sparked widespread controversy in Iraqi political circles, as some parties consider it a violation of Iraqi national sovereignty and a legitimization of the presence of Turkish forces in northern Iraq. End 25 min
