    Baghdad Today - Diyala
Diyala Council member Aws Ibrahim Al-Mahdawi confirmed today, Monday (September 16, 2024), that Baghdad has officially agreed to start establishing a customs point in Bawa Mahmoud, near Khanaqin District, between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, with the aim of obtaining customs tariffs according to the officially approved routes.
Al-Mahdawi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Turning this area into a customs point led to severe traffic congestion and a delay in the entry of travelers and trucks for hours."
"We are now trying as much as possible to relieve the bottlenecks by creating two entry paths and providing basic services and shelters, but we need support from Diyala and Baghdad to accelerate the provision of the necessary tools to make work at the Bawa Mahmoud customs flexible and in the right direction," he added.
Al-Mahdawi stressed that "the establishment of the Bawe Mahmoud Customs is a federal decision from Baghdad, not from Diyala, and comes within a vision to increase non-oil revenues for the country's treasury."
He pointed out that a percentage of these revenues will go to the Diyala treasury to finance service projects, while currently ensuring that the severe traffic congestion file is resolved.
This point is considered the second after the control of "Al-Safra" in Salah al-Din, which was one of the most important outlets that organized the entry of goods from the Kurdistan region to the capital, as about 9,500 trucks pass through it daily (according to official statistics), with imports estimated at about 200 million dinars daily, which was removed years ago.
