Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani issued strict directives to tackle currency smuggling, arrest smugglers and speculators at the dollar exchange rate, confiscate smuggled funds, and subject external controls to control and scrutiny.
Yahya Rasool Abdullah, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, said in a statement, “Al-Sudani emphasized the smoothness of banking work in banks and exchanges to ensure freedom of currency circulation in accordance with the legal banking contexts that are subject to commodity and financial exchange mechanisms and to facilitate the access of citizens wishing to travel and treatment to the currency.” and prevent intruders and beneficiaries from these procedures.
Governmental measures taken by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani did not succeed in stopping the huge rise in the exchange rate of the dollar, as the Iraqi stock exchanges jumped to more than 170 thousand dinars compared to $100.
The US ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, says that the United States does not set the exchange rate for the dollar and has not imposed sanctions on new Iraqi banks, after Iraqi accusations in this regard.
The Iraqi currency lost about 10% of its value, after procedures related to imposing compliance rules on the Central Bank of Iraq's dealings with currency dealers in relation to the US dollar.
Today, Thursday, the National Security Agency was able to arrest owners of major companies who manipulate prices and smuggle currency.
“Under the supervision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and based on his directives, the National Security Agency arrested a group of owners of large companies that manipulated and speculated on prices and smuggled currency abroad,” the agency’s spokesman, Arshad al-Hakim, said in a statement.
The statement added, "The operation took place after an intelligence effort and judicial orders, and it will continue until all targets are arrested, and it comes as part of the government's efforts and plan on the currency smuggling file."
