Reuters, the international news agency, revealed today, Tuesday, that the Iraqi government has agreed to pass the contract for the "Total Energy" company, which has been subject to political controversy, after it was suspended for two years since its signing in 2021.
The agency stated, quoting officials within the Iraqi government, according to what was translated by (Baghdad Today), that the Iraqi government, after a "long wait", agreed this morning to "pass the French Total Energy deal to invest in the energy sector in Iraq at a value of 27 billion US dollars for a period of 25 years, and with an initial payment." It's worth $10 billion."
According to statements made by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki during an interview with the French newspaper "Le Figaro" last month, in which he declared, "the refusal of the local political parties to agree to pass the Total Energy deal with less than 40 percent of its imports."
The company, according to previous statements reported by (Baghdad Today), confirmed that it "will not risk" entering the "volatile" Iraqi market unless it obtains guarantees and percentages that are in line with its work inside the country, which exacerbated the delay in passing the deal during the last period.
Iraqi officials, who spoke to Reuters, also confirmed that the agreement, which has not been officially announced yet, includes the start of implementing the deal "during the next few days," expecting it to be officially announced within the next few hours, according to the agency.
It is noteworthy that Baghdad signed its deal with "Total Energy" during September of the year 2021, and it was scheduled to enter into force at the end of the year, which was disrupted as a result of "political differences."
