Two sources told Reuters on Tuesday that Baghdad had reached an agreement to acquire a 30% stake in Total Energies projects in Iraq, worth $27 billion, which had been delayed for a long time. "The agreement should be activated within days," said a senior official at the Iraqi Oil Ministry. Total Energies Iraq did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The two parties signed the agreement in 2021, and it provides for the establishment of “Total Energies”, four oil, gas and renewable energy projects with initial investments of ten billion dollars in southern Iraq over a period of 25 years.
Sources told Reuters early last year: "The agreement witnessed several setbacks amid disagreements between Iraqi politicians over its terms."
Iraq and France signed a strategic partnership during a visit by the newly appointed Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad al-Sudani, to Paris in late January 2023, during which cooperation in energy issues was discussed, including with Total Energies.
Al-Sudani, who took office last October, met with the CEO of Total Energies, Patrick Pouyanne, during his visit to Paris.
