The Parliamentary Culture Committee held the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage, one of the formations of the Ministry of Culture, responsible for protecting archaeological sites in Iraq, while warning of the possibility of the extinction of nearly 10,000 archaeological sites in Babil Governorate.
A member of the Parliamentary Committee for Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Rafik Al-Salihi, said in a press interview seen by “Takadam” that “the absence of the necessary financial allocations, the failure to provide cadres, and the failure of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage, all of these factors contribute to the failure to protect and preserve antiquities,” noting that “there are more Of the 10,000 archaeological sites in Iraq, it is neglected, and there is no party responsible for protecting and preserving it, and it is left vulnerable to theft and harsh environmental conditions, especially in Babylon.
He explained, "The committee is interested in the issue of antiquities and is working to face challenges, especially with regard to providing the necessary requirements, through legislation and amendment of some relevant laws," noting that "there are tendencies to legislate laws and amend others to suit the stage and advance the reality of antiquities and preserve them from extinction and operations." Looting and theft.”
And that "the committee submitted a request to the Finance Committee in the House of Representatives to include a paragraph in the 2023 budget that would allow the appointment of a number of employees and guards in archaeological sites to preserve and protect them."
