    Two Arab [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] members - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and Kuwait - succeeded in raising oil refining capacity during the past year, after starting new refineries, in contrast to a decrease in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and stability in Algeria and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], according to the annual report of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]).

    These are the most prominent figures on the capacity of oil refineries in the Arab member states of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] during the past year, and performance on an annual basis.

    * Oil refineries in Saudi Arabia
    Annual data show that the capacity of oil refineries in Saudi Arabia has declined over the past year to 3.291 million barrels per day, compared to 3.327 million barrels per day in 2021, as a result of the decrease in the operational capacity of both the Yanbu and Riyadh refineries.

    The refining capacity of the Yanbu refinery decreased from 252,000 to 220,000 barrels per day over the past year, and the oil refining capacity of the Riyadh refinery decreased to 126,000 barrels per day, compared to 130,000 in 2021.

    Last year’s decline came after an increase achieved by Saudi Arabia in 2021, with the entry of the Jazan refinery on the production map, which increased the capacity of oil refineries in the Kingdom in that year to 3.327 million barrels per day, compared to 2.927 million barrels per day in 2020. On the other hand

    , The refining capacity of the Ras Tanura refinery has stabilized at 550 thousand barrels per day, the SAMREF refinery at 400 thousand barrels per day, the Rabigh refinery with a capacity of 400 thousand barrels per day, and the SATORP refinery at 460 thousand barrels per day.

    The oil refining capacity of the YASREF and SASREF refineries did not change, remaining at 430,000 and 305,000 barrels per day, respectively, according to data monitored by the Energy Research Unit.

    * Refineries in the Emirates
    The capacity of oil refineries in the UAE declined during the past year to 1.227 million barrels per day, compared to 1.272 million barrels per day, despite the increase in the production of the Fujairah 1 refinery.

    The decrease in oil refining capacity in the UAE is due to the Umm Al-Nar refinery, for which the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] report did not monitor any refining capacity during the past year, compared to about 85 thousand barrels per day in 2021. On the other hand, the refining capacity of the Fujairah refinery, the first stage, increased during the past year to 120

    thousand barrels per day, compared to 80,000 barrels per day in 2021, while the capacity of the Fujairah refinery, the second phase, stabilized at 80,000 barrels per day.

    The refining capacity of the Ruwais refinery did not change, to settle at 817,000 barrels per day, and the Jebel Ali refinery, at 210,000 barrels per day.

    * Oil refineries in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
    On the contrary, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] succeeded in raising its refining capacity during the past year to 1.116 million barrels per day, compared to 976 thousand barrels in 2021, with the support of placing the Karbala refinery on the production map.

    [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] had started production from the Karbala refinery during the past year, with a refining capacity of 140 thousand barrels per day, to contribute to increasing the country’s production of oil derivatives, and to support its position towards reaching self-sufficiency by 2025, and then shifting to export abroad.

    Although [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is an important source of crude oil, and one of the most prominent producers in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], it is an importer of petroleum products, due to the terrorist attacks that greatly affected the oil refining sector.

    [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] suffers from a deficit in providing oil products locally, which costs it about $5 billion annually, and gasoline and diesel account for $3.5 billion of the total.

    The refining capacity of most of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]’s refineries has stabilized over the past year, the most prominent of which is the Al-Samoud refinery (formerly Baiji) with a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, the Basra refinery at 210,000 barrels per day, the Dora refinery at 140,000 barrels per day, and the Kirkuk refinery at 56,000 barrels per day.

    The refining capacity of Najaf, Samawah and Nasiriyah (Dhi Qar) refineries stabilized at 30,000 barrels per day each.

    The refining capacity of the Maysan refinery stabilized at 40,000 barrels per day, the Diwaniyah refinery at 20,000 barrels per day, and the modern refinery at 16,000 barrels per day.

    * Oil refineries in Kuwait
    , with the support of Al-Zour Refinery, Kuwait was able to raise the capacity of oil refineries during the past year to 1.005 million barrels per day, compared to 800 thousand barrels per day in 2021.

    The rise was supported by the start-up of Kuwait's newest refinery, as the month of November of last year witnessed the start of commercial operation of the first phase of the Al-Zour refinery, with a refining capacity of 205,000 barrels per day.

    The design capacity of the Al-Zour refinery is about 615,000 barrels per day, with expectations that it will be fully operational during the last quarter of this year.

    In March 2023, the refinery witnessed the operation of the second phase, to reach a refining capacity of 410,000 barrels per day.
