The economist Ali Karim explained, on Monday, that Baghdad has pressure cards that it can play against Ankara to ensure obtaining water rights after the water levels declined significantly in the Tigris and Euphrates.

Karim told Al-Maalouma that "Iraq spends more than $15 billion annually on imports from Turkey, while the Turkish side worked to cut off water from the country under the pretext of exerting pressure towards Baghdad regarding the fight against the PKK."
He added, "Baghdad possesses economic papers that can be used to put pressure on Ankara, especially since Iraq is one of the major suppliers of the dollar currency towards Turkey, especially as it suffers from American pressure regarding the hard currency."
