The Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee announced, on Monday, the allocation of one trillion dinars to confront climate change, desertification, and plant trees in Iraqi cities and governorates.
Iraq is among the five countries most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, according to the United Nations.
Committee member Ibtisam Al-Hilali said, “The Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee hosted the Minister of Oil to discuss the national afforestation campaign, which is supported and funded by the Ministry of Oil with an amount of one trillion dinars,” noting that “the purpose of the initiative is to confront climate change and desertification and plant trees in cities.” And all Iraqi governorates.
She added, “The local government, under the supervision of the governor, submits a request that includes a study and plan for the project and their need for funds, whether 10, 20, 50 billion or more, to reforest and plant palm trees in the governorate to confront climate changes in the governorate.”
On March 12, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani launched a “major” initiative to plant 5 million trees and palm trees throughout Iraq’s governorates.
This came during his announcement of the launch of the Iraq Climate Conference, which will be hosted by Basra Governorate over two days, with international, regional and governmental participation.
The World Bank said, at the end of 2022, that Iraq faces an urgent climate challenge that it must confront by moving towards a “greener and more environmentally friendly” development model, especially by diversifying its economy and reducing its dependence on carbon.
According to a report issued by the organization, by the year 2040, “Iraq will need $233 billion in investments to respond to its most urgent development needs as it embarks on greener and more comprehensive growth,” which is equivalent to 6% of its annual gross domestic product.
