    Economy News - Baghdad

[rtl]Despite the relative delay and complicated circumstances that the country has witnessed, Iraq is approaching the completion of dozens of oil projects and specialized refineries, which can achieve self-sufficiency in various petroleum derivatives and products, thus saving billions of dollars that were spent every year to supply these derivatives from neighboring countries, such as gasoline and petroleum. Gas and others.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Obsolescence of refineries[/rtl]
[rtl]Expert in oil and energy affairs, Ali Nimah, said, “Most Iraqi refineries suffer from age, and therefore the production of these refineries is mostly heavy products, and even the gasoline produced by Iraqi refineries is low octane, meaning it is pumped like regular gasoline at filling stations, and perhaps worse, meaning octane.” Between 80-86,” according to the official newspaper.[/rtl]

[rtl]He added, "As is known, all modern cars need improved or high-octane gasoline (more than 95). These types of gasoline that Iraq produces from its refineries are not compatible with Iraq's needs, and thus caused the country's need to import some products as a result of increased demand."[/rtl]

    [rtl]Heavy acid oils[/rtl]
[rtl]The matter is not only due to the wear and tear of the refineries, as expert Ali Nimah points out, but rather as a result of the quality of Iraqi oils, the majority of which are heavy or medium sour oils. He adds, “Most Iraqi oils are medium or heavy, especially Basra oils, and perhaps the best types of oil we have are oils.” Kirkuk, which reaches the limits of 35-36 IBM, compared to some international oil companies that reach 40 or more in the countries of the world.”[/rtl]

[rtl]Nehme pointed out that "the use of these medium or heavy sour oils in refineries is the basis of obsolete refineries, so their production, of course, cannot be like the modern and complex refineries that currently exist in the developed countries of the world, and therefore the majority of their products are heavy products." He continued, "Therefore, we find that there are large quantities of black oil produced by these refineries that are surplus to Iraq's needs, and therefore they are exported in exchange for light products, which are imported to compensate for the shortfall in demand, which has multiplied greatly as a result of the high imports of cars, generators, and trucks."[/rtl]

    [rtl]Modern quality refineries[/rtl]
[rtl]With Iraq opening some projects or laying the foundation stone for new projects with advanced technology, such as the Al-Faw refinery, the Karbala refinery, the Najaf refinery and other projects, the country is looking forward to changing this equation and starting to achieve self-sufficiency in some petroleum products and their derivatives, such as fuel gas oil for cars, white oil and liquid gas, and reducing The consumer need for regular and high octane gasoline.[/rtl]

[rtl]Haider Al-Husseini, director of the Karbala Refinery, confirms that the refinery has two advantages: the quantity of light products that the country needs and the quality of the products. Al-Husseini explained, “What should be focused on is the quality of the product, because the Karbala Refinery produces Euro 5 derivatives, which are better than those imported from outside Iraq.” Therefore, this product provides a good addition to the Ministry of Oil.”[/rtl]

    [rtl]White products[/rtl]
[rtl]He continued, "The goal of building the refinery is to maximize white products, the most important of which is improved and high-octane gasoline. The refinery is now operating at full capacity and production has entered the local market many months ago."[/rtl]

[rtl]Al-Husseini pointed out that "the trial operation stage has passed, and the refinery is operating at its full capacity in an excellent manner. The products have been successfully distributed to the local market for some time, and we have our laboratories in the refinery, and all products are within the specifications of international markets."[/rtl]

[rtl]It is planned for the Karbala refinery to produce about 9 million liters per day, but Al-Husseini indicates reaching “the production of 8 million liters of gasoline, and more than 4 million liters of gas oil, in addition to reaching 2.5 to 3 million liters of kerosene (white oil). ) And jet fuel and sulfur, as well as asphalt with a high purity that is unique to the Karbala refinery, with qualities that are not found in all parts of the country,” according to his description.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Covering the country's need[/rtl]
[rtl]The Karbala refinery not only fills the local need for these products in Karbala governorate, but also extends to the middle Euphrates governorates, such as Najaf, Babylon, and Diwaniyah. The warehouses withdraw the product from the Karbala refinery, to pump it to other governorates in central and southern Iraq, because of its high quantity and great quality, and it is hoped It should cover fifty to six percent of the country’s need at the present time, and this can be increased in the future after adding other units and increasing the production capacity of the refinery, according to a plan supervised by the Ministry of Oil.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Aviation fuel[/rtl]
[rtl]While the Karbala refinery is about to expand its production lines of jet fuel and gasoline, the refinery’s biggest goal is to maximize the production of improved and high-octane gasoline, and reduce the volume of imports in this direction, in addition to striving to develop the production of liquefied gas and jet fuel, the latter of which will be one of the refinery’s most prominent products. Karbala, due to its direct geographical proximity to Karbala International Airport, and the need of arriving and departing aircraft for this type of fuel.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Self-sufficiency[/rtl]
[rtl]After achieving this year the fulfillment of the consumer need of citizens for white oil, liquid gas, and gas oil, the Ministry of Oil plans that the middle or end of the year 2024 is the specified date for reaching the fulfillment of the consumer need for gasoline, according to the Undersecretary for Refining Affairs, Hamid Younis. Al-Zobaie explained, "We have many projects, upon completion of which we hope to improve and develop the quality of the products, such as FCC units and isomerization units, the latter of which will be operational soon."[/rtl]

    [rtl]Completion of Shuaiba refinery[/rtl]
[rtl]In the Shuaiba oil refinery in the city of Basra, the fourth refining unit was inaugurated, with a capacity of 70 thousand barrels per day after maintenance operations carried out by our national resources, which saved an amount exceeding three hundred million dollars, which the Japanese companies would have received if the work had been completed.[/rtl]

[rtl]Hossam Hussein Wali El-Din, General Manager of the Southern Refineries Company, said: “Work on this refinery had been withdrawn from one of the Czech companies implementing the project, as a result of a breach of the terms of the contract with the Ministry of Oil, but our staff in the Systems and Control Department of the Southern Refineries Company were able to carry out this major work.” And save millions of dollars in hard currency.”[/rtl]
    [rtl]
    Billion imports:
For its part, the Oil and Gas Committee in the Iraqi House of Representatives (Parliament) described the continuation of Iraq, an oil-rich country, in importing petroleum derivatives in amounts amounting to five billion dollars annually, as “shameful”, given that Iraq is the second largest oil exporting country after the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia, and called for effective measures to improve the performance of refineries and achieve the country’s self-sufficiency in petroleum products.[/rtl]
    [rtl]
As for the Minister of Oil and Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, Hayan Abdul Ghani, he indicated that in the second quarter of the year 2024, Iraq will achieve self-sufficiency in oil derivatives, adding, “The Karbala refinery now produces more than seven thousand five hundred cubic meters of high-octane gasoline per day.” That is, the purity of gasoline reaches 95%, as well as many other refining products.”[/rtl]
    [rtl]
Abdel Ghani pointed out, “This achievement will provide large quantities of white petroleum products, and upon completion of these projects, we will reach the stage of complete sufficiency, God willing,” according to the minister’s words.[/rtl]
    [rtl]
    Reducing imports
and with the launch of the fourth phase project in the Shuaiba oil refinery, which has a production capacity of seventy thousand barrels per day, and whose completion stages have been long awaited, due to maintenance work in it eight years ago, national oil engineers hope to find larger development areas, to break what is known as the monopoly of control. Foreign companies implementing projects in Iraq.[/rtl]
    [rtl]
The entry of many refineries into service with advanced production lines constitutes an important contribution to reducing the import of derivatives and high-octane automobile fuel to about half of the country’s daily consumption needs. According to the Ministry of Oil, next year will witness Iraq declaring self-sufficiency in all petroleum derivatives and fuel, and closing the import file after... Dozens of advanced refineries have entered service with large production capacities in most of the country's governorates.[/rtl]
