    Baghdad today - Diyala
Today, Sunday (January 14, 2024), the Diyala Health Department revealed that 5 land windows in Diyala and the Kurdistan region have been included in “red detachments” to besiege drug smuggling mafias.
Diyala Health Media Director Fares Al-Azzawi said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “his department is continuing its war on the smuggling of medicines coming from the Kurdistan region and the rest of the provinces and has relied directly on forming detachments that include representatives of 4 parties, including security, to deploy them in 5 land windows with the region.” And the governorates in order to inspect any suspicious shipments.”
He added, "The measure comes within the framework of preventing the smuggling of medicines that have health and environmental harms, especially since his department seized more than 20 shipments in recent months through a distinguished intelligence effort."
Meanwhile, pharmaceutical expert Alwan Hassan confirmed in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “medicine smuggling is led by international and regional mafias in Iraq, and it is a trade whose annual costs reach 10-15 billion dinars through Diyala Governorate only, which indicates that we are facing a huge black trade.”
He pointed out that "the danger of smuggling medicines comes from the fact that they are of unknown origin, manufactured according to poor specifications, or have expired," stressing that "closing the entrances to Diyala to smuggling is a difficult and complex task, but the security services have succeeded in dismantling some dangerous networks due to Sudanese's direct efforts in the past months."
He continued, "Deploying detachments to follow up on shipments of smuggled medicines are similar to red detachments that give a signal prohibiting the entry of medicines that pose a threat to the lives of patients, especially since all reports indicate that a large portion of them are of unknown origin."
Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani previously said that the size of the medicine market in Iraq annually is $3 billion, 90% of which is imported, and the largest part of it is unexamined, as it results from smuggling.
