Tourism: Closure of more than 85 percent of violating companies

The Tourism Authority is close to completing the (automation) project to control tourism work in all governorates, while 85 percent of violating companies have been closed.
The Director of the Tourist Groups Department at the Authority, Mahdi Ghadhban Al-Saadi, told Al-Sabah: The (automation) project will contribute to facilitating the citizen’s relationship with the Authority by dispensing with reviews and following electronic systems instead of paper when submitting requests to grant or renew a license to practice the profession or establish tourist facilities or companies.
He added that the department granted 600 licenses for travel and tourism companies to operate, and 85 percent of unlicensed companies were closed.
He explained that the department has prepared a plan to develop tourism work in agreement with the relevant authorities in the Kurdistan Region with the aim of facilitating procedures for tourists, and the inspection and follow-up committees in the Tourism Authority are following up on the work of companies in cooperation with tourism security for the purpose of closing down violators and taking legal action against them.
Al-Saadi pointed out the opening of two coordination offices, one in the region and the other in Baghdad, for the purpose of organising tourist groups according to a mechanism that serves the rights of the citizen, including reducing fees on official licensed companies, granting them loans of between 5-10 million dinars, and determining a fixed identification programme that includes placing a barcode on each car to organising groups by land, with an official badge issued by the authority.
He pointed out that contracts have been signed with a number of neighboring countries to dispatch tourists by land, including Syria and Turkey, as well as with Saudi Arabia in agreement with the Hajj and Umrah Authority to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, as the movement of authorized tourist buses is subject to monitoring via GPS by tourist security, intelligence, and national security until they reach the border areas of the countries and the Kurdistan Region.
