Khairi Bozani, advisor to the presidency of the region, confirmed on Sunday that the presence of the President of the Kurdistan Region at the climate summit in Baku is an important opportunity for the Kurdistan Region to showcase its efforts in the transition to clean and sustainable energy.
The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, is scheduled to travel to the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, tomorrow, Monday, to attend the Conference of the Parties (COP29) on climate change, which is being held this year in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22.
This summit comes at a time when the countries of the world are seeking to discuss solutions to reduce the effects of climate change, which has become an increasing threat to the environment and humanity.
“The conference is being held in Baku, the oil city that was the cradle of the global oil industry, where the first oil fields were opened in 1846 and which became a leader in production at the end of the 19th century. This year’s conference has gained special symbolism as it is being held in Baku, whose economy is heavily dependent on oil and gas exports, two of the most significant sources of carbon emissions that contribute to global warming,” Bozani said in a statement.
“Azerbaijan’s hosting of the summit raises many questions about its readiness – as an oil country – to support the transition to clean energy. Although major countries, such as the United States and the UAE, face significant challenges in transitioning away from fossil fuels, Azerbaijan has not played a prominent role at the international level in this area, and its hosting of this event seems to reflect a growing desire to engage in global climate issues,” he added.
“Nechirvan Barzani’s presence at this conference is an important opportunity for the Kurdistan Region to showcase its efforts in transitioning to clean and sustainable energy,” Bozani said. “The region’s economy relies on oil and gas, but it seeks to strengthen its position as a destination for sustainable investments. Barzani may present a Kurdish vision on the challenges facing regions like Kurdistan in dealing with climate change, especially in light of the political and economic crises that compound the difficulty of climate change.”
He added, "Moreover, the conference can be a platform to enhance cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and participating countries, including Azerbaijan and other countries, to achieve joint projects in the fields of clean energy, environmental infrastructure, and climate change adaptation programs."
