Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Wafaa Mohammed revealed the reasons behind the delay in forming the Kurdistan Regional Government.
Mohammed said, “We are waiting for the results of the appeals for the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections,” indicating that “the KDP delegation will begin its visits and negotiations with political parties this week.”
He added, “The formation of the government will be delayed due to the announcement of some opposition parties, and other parties demanding positions beyond their entitlements.”
Earlier, the Independent High Electoral Commission announced that the KDP won the largest number of seats in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament.
According to the final results of the regional parliament elections, which were announced by the commission in Erbil, the KDP won 39 seats with about 809,197 votes, strengthening its position as the largest party in parliament.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan came in second place with 23 seats through about 408,141 votes, while the New Generation Movement won 15 seats with the support of 290,991 votes. The Kurdistan Islamic Union won 7 seats, while the National Position Movement won 4 seats, the Kurdistan Justice Group won 3 seats, the People's Front won 2 seats, the Change Movement won 1 seat, and the Kurdistan Region Alliance won 1 seat as well.
The elections saw a turnout of 72.6 percent, with a special voting phase for security forces on October 20 and general participation on October 22. Over 2.6 million voters out of approximately 2.9 million biometrically registered voters participated in the polls.
