UN to Al-Sabah: The Iraqi government has made progress in the environmental file

When praise comes from the highest international organization in the world, this means "no doubt", neither near nor far, about the achieved accomplishment. Despite the environmental conditions facing Iraq due to climate change that affects most countries in the world, the United Nations Development Program praised what the government has achieved in this file, and made it a priority within its program.
It is expected that the (29) United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, will start today, Monday.
The Iraqi delegation is headed by President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid.
According to those concerned, “the Conference of the Parties is no longer just an annual conference that discusses climate change issues, but has become an urgent agenda in the policies of countries, especially for the most affected countries such as Iraq, and this is confirmed by the utmost importance that the government attaches to this event throughout the year.”
According to a statement by the Presidency's Media Department, received by "Al-Sabah", "the President of the Republic will head to the Republic of Azerbaijan today, Monday, in response to an official invitation from Azerbaijani President Ilham Heydar Aliyev to participate in the United Nations Climate Summit (COP29) held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku."
Meanwhile, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Iraq, Auke Lootsma, told Al-Sabah that “Iraq’s participation in the climate conference embodies a clear commitment to building a sustainable environmental future that enhances the well-being of its citizens and strengthens its position as a regional leader in climate issues in the United Nations Development Program. We are proud of our partnership with Iraq and of supporting it throughout its journey in facing the challenges of climate change.”
“The Iraqi president’s attendance at the climate conference will reflect Iraq’s commitment to addressing the global climate crisis, even with the current regional turmoil and domestic recovery requirements that may seem to take precedence,” Lootsma added. “This was confirmed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s continued guidance and support for participation in the conference as one of the priorities of the government’s program.”
He added, "The positive government performance in this file confirms that the issue of avoiding the effects of climate change is not just a policy, but has become an existential issue for Iraq."
