    Baghdad today - Diyala
Today, Sunday (January 28, 2024), a government official resolved the controversy regarding the possibility of declaring a state of alert in 12 border areas east of Diyala Governorate.
The mayor of Mandali district, Mazen Akram, said in an interview with “Baghdad Today,” that “rainfall rates in 12 border areas east of Diyala, including Mandali, were very weak in the past 24 hours, and the results were disappointing despite weather reports that confirmed that their rates would be at least Moderate and heavy on the Iranian side, which means the possibility of torrential torrential rains.”
He added, "There will not be any alert in any border area with the limited rain, which has increased by farmers and residents alike, especially since all reports indicate that we are facing a rainy season par excellence, but the observed rates are very small and may lead to a disaster for agricultural areas within a short period." If there is no rain in appropriate quantities.
Akram pointed out that "floods and rain revive groundwater, which constitutes 90% of the water supply capacity in the border areas and their villages, and remove the specter of drought, even if temporarily, to overcome the summer scarcity."
In late December 2023, the Department of Water Resources revealed that an extensive study had been conducted to establish two dams in eastern Iraq, one of them with Iran, which may represent a lifeline for the “drought triangle” in Diyala, the governorate most affected by drought during the past two years.
Director of Water Resources in Diyala, Muhannad Al-Maamouri, said in an interview with “Baghdad Al-Youm,” that “his ministry’s efforts are continuing to enhance the balance of dams and water tanks, optimize the use of water, and adopt all frameworks to increase the water harvesting strategy in all regions of the country to confront the drought crisis and its repercussions on the lives of the people.” .
He added, "The Ministry of Water Resources, through the General Authority of Dams and Reservoirs, has adopted an extensive study and preparation of designs for the construction of two dams east of Diyala, the first near the border strip with Iran, and negotiations are currently taking place with Tehran regarding it, and the second on the Oil Valley within the Iraqi border."
He stated, "The technical committees are continuing to prepare relevant designs and studies in order to proceed with the project, which will contribute to storing good quantities of seasonal flood water and the possibility of using it to provide drinking and irrigation water."
