The head of the committee, MP Faleh Al-Khazali, said in a press conference today, Sunday, that “the local tomato crop in Basra Governorate and the southern governorates would cover everything the Iraqi people need, but the Kurdistan Region has opened the borders to everything imported, especially these days.”
He explained, “The cost of a 30-kilogram box of tomatoes is approximately 8,000 dinars, but it is now 3,000 dinars in the market due to the entry of foreign crops across the borders of the region. This has had a significant impact on farmers’ income, so that there are 4,000 farms in Basra Governorate out of 13,000 thousand farms, most of which have collapsed and been abandoned.” Peasants due to the lack of government support, and this cannot be achieved with the presence of open outlets and lack of control over them, especially in the Kurdistan region.”
