The House of Representatives is approaching the end of its second legislative term on the ninth of next May, without choosing a new speaker after the Federal Court terminated the membership of former President Muhammad al-Halbousi.
Representative Yasser Al-Husseini downplayed the embarrassment of the vacancy of the president’s seat by saying: “It is something that does not violate the law, given that the council has a first and second deputy, and conditions are normal, but the absence of a president generally reflects on the performance of the council,” indicating that “the absence of a president of a constitutional council, There is nothing wrong with the law to continue managing it by delegation, but the lack of a president weakens the council.”
Al-Husseini added in an interview with Al-Sabah, “The choice of the Speaker of Parliament depends on the Sunni options, as it is a position that belongs to them, and up to this moment their affairs have not been decided, and as soon as the Sunni option is proposed and presented to the Council, we are certain that he will be elected in the first session.” He said. The representative continued by saying: “It was expected that these options would be decided after Eid al-Fitr, but until this moment nothing has become clear,” pointing out that “the political compass of the Sunni component changed after the dismissal of Muhammad al-Halbousi and the introduction of a candidate who was not successful in qualifying for this.” “The position is weaker than the Taqadum Party.” Al-Husseini believes that “the weakness of the Taqadum Party has strengthened the front of others with regard to choosing a new figure from it, on the assumption that this position is not the monopoly of the Taqadum Party alone, but rather it is a position that the Sunni component deserves,” as he put it. .
