The early elections are the talk of “dark rooms”.. Al-Maliki’s coalition confirms the desire to show solidarity with Al-Sadr
Talk about early elections has recently become a subject of controversy among political forces. There are those who support going towards them in implementation of what was stated in the political agreement paper on the basis of which the government of Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani was formed, while some reject that and tend towards a favor that gives Al-Sudani the opportunity to complete his term. As for The third party, the politicians, is “secretly” pushing for elections.
In this regard, the State of Law coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, wants to move toward holding “early” elections, and attributes this to “an attempt to return the Sadrist movement to the political process.”
According to the representative of the coalition, Arif Al-Hamami, “The rule of law has expressed a desire to hold these elections in line with the desire of the Sadrist movement.”
However, despite this, the Sadrist movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, “who is secluded away from politics,” has not yet expressed a public desire to break the seclusion and return to political life.
Al-Hamami goes on to say: “The approach towards early elections depends on consensus between the political forces,” noting that “this issue has been talked about on more than one occasion, and there are forces that support and others that reject.”
He also revealed “secret discussions between the political blocs to resolve the issue of early elections by moving towards them or giving a full opportunity to the Sudanese government.”
Al-Hamami points out, while speaking to (Al-Mada), that “until the moment, the blocs have not expressed a clear desire, except for those that explicitly announced their desire to hold early elections.”
For his part, the head of the Amal Parliamentary Bloc, Yasser Al-Husseini, said, “A movement is taking place within the House of Representatives, accompanied by the collection of signatures by members of the House, to amend the election law and hold early elections.”
He added, “There are demands from some political blocs accompanying the amendment of the electoral law, and each bloc wants to amend the articles of the law according to its political whims,” pointing out that “some are pushing for the return of (multiple districts) and others are demanding the abolition of the (Saint-Lego) electoral system.”
Al-Husseini explained, “There is a political demand for the resignation of the executive official who intends to run for elections, six months before they are scheduled to be held,” noting that “the request to amend the election law was submitted to the Presidency of the House of Representatives, and up to this moment the latter has not decided on the request, and it has not been discussed in the House.”
Last week, former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said that the State of Law coalition he leads does not reject the idea of holding parliamentary elections before the scheduled date of 2025.
According to political sources, the change in the position of the leader of the Islamic Dawa Party regarding accelerating holding new parliamentary elections is linked to his increasing ambitions to return. To the position of Prime Minister, which he had left after spending eight consecutive years there.
Earlier, the Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat quoted political sources as saying, “Former Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki sent secret mediators messages to the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada Al-Sadr, to reach an understanding about the latter’s return to the political process through the upcoming legislative elections, which also included the possibility of discussing Early voting if necessary.”
Last week, the Sadrist movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, announced that it was changing its popular name to the “National Shiite Movement,” which observers considered part of the movement to return to political action, given that the movement has broad popular masses in most of the country’s cities and governorates, especially in the central regions. And the south.
Last year, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani made the progress of holding legislative elections in Iraq conditional on the dissolution of the House of Representatives for himself, while he hinted at the possibility of the current federal government that he heads continuing for a full term due to the “confidence” it enjoys from the political forces and parties. This was during an interview with the American newspaper “The National”.
