{Coordination}: July 20 is the final date to agree on the parliament speaker

The House of Representatives announced yesterday, Sunday, the start of its first legislative session of its third legislative year, amid expectations that the House of Representatives will set a date for its first session early next week. The session’s agenda is expected to include choosing a new speaker of parliament, while a leader in the “Coordination Framework” reported that the latter gave the leaders of the Sunni component a final deadline to agree on the identity of the new speaker of parliament, and in the event of failure to agree, the representatives will vote on the candidates for the position.
Member of Parliament, Diaa Al-Hindi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “Parliament will begin its work after the end of the visit of the tenth of Muharram,” expecting that “the selection of the new Speaker of Parliament will be decided in the first or second session of the legislative term.”
He pointed out the "correctness" of the news circulating about the intention of the acting Speaker of Parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, to change the internal regulations of Parliament, indicating that "this change aims to open the door for new figures to occupy the position of Speaker of Parliament in the event that the Sunni component does not agree on a specific candidate."
Al-Hindi added, "There is almost complete agreement within the Sunni component to choose Al-Issawi as a candidate for this position," explaining that "a large Shiite bloc that opposed Al-Issawi's nomination has changed its position, which has contributed to bringing viewpoints closer together regarding him."
In this regard, Iraqis are awaiting the results of the next session, which may witness important changes in the structure and leadership of Parliament, reflecting new developments in the Iraqi political scene.
Meanwhile, the "Coordination Framework", which brings together the Shiite political forces in parliament, set July 20 as the date to decide on naming a new parliament speaker, stressing that after this date, the matter will be left to the members of the House of Representatives to choose for themselves who they see as suitable for this position.
The leader of the "Framework", Aid Al-Hilali, said: "The forces of the Coordination Framework gave the Sunni political forces a deadline until July 20, i.e. after the end of the Ashura rituals, to decide their position and agree among themselves on the file of electing the Speaker of Parliament."
He added, "If the Sunni political forces do not agree among themselves, a session will be held to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in the first session of the legislative term, and the matter will be left to the representatives, and whichever candidate gets the highest number of votes will be the new president," stressing that "there is no postponement in this, as the framework forces want to resolve the issue quickly, as it has had a negative impact on legislative and oversight work."
