Economic expert Ali Daadoush called for removing industrial areas that are spread in residential areas outside the capital, Baghdad, while stressing that these areas change the type of land from residential to commercial, which has caused the capital’s civilized appearance to be distorted.
Daadoush explained that “pollution is a prominent feature of the industrial areas in Baghdad.” He stressed that “there is another danger caused by these areas, which is changing the type of land from residential to commercial, which causes this phenomenon to distort the civilized appearance of the capital.”
Daadoush added that “the concerned authorities must remove these industrial cities from the capital and transfer them to integrated industrial cities outside Baghdad or on its outskirts, in addition to the government providing these cities with services through which they will receive taxes from these workshops.” He indicated that “this solution will have a positive impact on the process of diversifying the economy from tax revenues and contributing to the gross domestic product.”
Daadoush continued, “The importance of these workshops is to employ workers in Baghdad and reduce unemployment in the country, as these workers work in the industrial areas in an irregular and unofficial manner, considering that these workshops do not pay any taxes to the state, in addition to their import of goods, commodities and services, and these goods meet the needs of the citizen, such as car spare parts and others.”
He added, "We hope that the government will work to contain these industrial workshops in these neighborhoods, and place them in an integrated industrial city, and thus it will achieve an increase in the gross domestic product by increasing tax revenues and others."
It is noteworthy that the Baghdad Municipality had previously announced the existence of a government will to move industrial activities outside the capital, while indicating that some of these factories date back to the 1950s.
