The Parliamentary Finance Committee expressed its surprise today, Sunday, at the continuation of the legal retirement age at 61 years despite the suspension of appointments, deletion and innovation levels, considering that "early retirement" and the suspension of appointments will lead to a shortage in the staff in ministries and government departments.

“The previous amendment to the retirement law, which set the age at 61, was aimed at creating 300,000 new job opportunities, but with the absence of new appointments in the budget for the current and next years, keeping the current retirement age may lead to a shortage in the staff, in addition to stopping deletions and creations, as this situation raises questions about how to fill the vacancies that will arise due to the retirement of employees without appointing replacements for them,” said Jamal Koujar, a member of the Finance Committee.

He explained that despite the existence of disguised unemployment, many potential retirees have great experience that cannot be easily dispensed with, noting that signatures have been collected from a number of MPs to support this proposal, according to the government newspaper Al-Sabah.

Koger added that retirees’ salaries are already included in the budget, so keeping employees in work for a longer period will not create any additional burden on the budget, stressing that going into retirement reduces pressure on it, but at the same time may lead to the loss of important energies that the government can benefit from in the end, in addition to being a double-edged sword as it has positives and negatives, which requires careful study before making any decision.
