Baghdad is preparing... Will the Arab Tourism Capital be a platform for Iraq's return to the forefront?
The Iraqi government has taken serious steps to win the selection of Baghdad as the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2025, in a move aimed at enhancing the city’s position on the Arab and international tourism map.
Through this step, the government seeks to improve the economic and security image of Iraq, taking advantage of the rich cultural and historical potential enjoyed by the capital, Baghdad.
If achieved, this choice is expected to attract significant tourism investments and improve infrastructure, which will positively impact the national economy and contribute to enhancing security and social stability in the country.
A complete file that enhances your chances of winning.
The government advisor for tourism, antiquities and expatriates, Omar Al-Alawi, says, “The file of criteria for nominating Baghdad as the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2025 is a technical file par excellence related to the infrastructure owned by the state in various fields in health, civil defense and tourism.”
He added, "A committee was formed by royal order from the Prime Minister to follow up on the details of the work," noting that "the preparation of the file is complete, and it will be submitted this month."
He explained that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making intensive efforts in diplomatic and political work to obtain the necessary votes,” stressing that “Baghdad’s file will be voted on as the capital of Arab tourism.”
Al-Alawi added: “Our file includes 30 pages, and it is the largest file submitted to the Council of Arab Ministers compared to all the cities that previously submitted.”
He explains that “the most important goal is to restore Baghdad’s tourism, cultural and pioneering role in the region,” explaining that “the event will last for a year, during which there will be multiple conferences, seminars and workshops to discuss the issue of tourism in general.”
The Prime Minister's Advisor for Tourism Affairs added, "There are programs related to the official opening and the announcement of the launch of the Baghdad, Arab Tourism Capital, activities, which will last for a week."
He added, "The events will include a number of artistic evenings and exhibitions in all fields," noting that "historical and archaeological sites will be targeted on this occasion and a number of them will be rehabilitated to be ready to host the events."
He added, "There is a great possibility for important Arab artistic figures to attend the events."
For his part, the Director General of Tourist Groups at the Tourism and Antiquities Authority, Mahdi Al-Ghadhban, explains that “the file to nominate Baghdad as the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2025 has been fully prepared in cooperation with the relevant authorities, and all the required criteria for nomination have been met.”
Al-Ghadhban asserts that “the chances of winning the title of Arab Tourism Capital for Baghdad are very high, given that all the required criteria have been met, in addition to the details included in the file about the city’s tourist, cultural and religious attractions, supported by modern images and advanced printing techniques.”
The Director General of Tourist Groups points out that “the aim of nominating Baghdad is to enhance its position as a leading and sustainable tourist destination by highlighting its unique cultural heritage,” indicating that “a ministerial committee has been established to follow up on the file in the event of winning, as it will undertake improving the infrastructure and developing the quality of tourism services, in addition to organizing dozens of events in cooperation with relevant authorities.”
A new engine to revive the Iraqi economy
Economic expert Haider Al-Sheikh says, “Choosing Baghdad as the capital of Arab tourism has great benefits for the national economy,” noting that “this enhances Baghdad’s reputation as a tourist destination, which attracts more tourists from Arab and international countries.”
He added, “With the increase in the number of visitors, the revenues of various sectors such as hotels, restaurants, and tourism services will increase, which will contribute to creating new job opportunities and improving the infrastructure.”
The Sheikh explains that “the file will enhance investment in the tourism sector and its related infrastructure, leading to sustainable development and increased economic growth,” adding “the importance of cultural exchange and communication between Baghdad and the rest of the Arab countries, which contributes to strengthening economic and trade relations.”
The economic expert continues, “Choosing Baghdad as the capital of Arab tourism will bring great economic benefits to Iraq, and will contribute to stimulating the national economy by increasing tourism revenues and stimulating local and foreign investments.”
A gateway to promoting cultural heritage
Tourism activist Yousef Al-Karbouli believes that choosing Baghdad as the capital of Arab tourism could have wide-ranging effects on various aspects of life in Iraq.
“Baghdad has a rich cultural and historical heritage dating back centuries, from the Babylonian civilization through the Abbasid era,” Al-Karbouli said. “Choosing Baghdad as the capital of tourism could be an opportunity to highlight this heritage and restore archaeological and heritage landmarks. Cultural events and festivals could also be organized to highlight Iraqi history, arts and literature.”
“After years of conflict and instability, Iraq suffers from a negative international image. This title can help improve this image by attracting visitors from all over the world and introducing them to aspects of Iraq’s culture and beauty that may not be known,” he added, noting that “this can boost international confidence in Iraq and encourage greater engagement with the international community.”
He explained that “with the increase in the number of tourists, it will be necessary to provide additional services such as tourist guidance, transportation, hospitality, and other services related to tourism,” explaining that “this will lead to the creation of new job opportunities in these sectors, which will contribute to reducing the unemployment rate and improving the standard of living for local residents.”
The tourism activist confirms that “choosing Baghdad as the capital of Arab tourism could be a pivotal step towards a comprehensive Iraqi renaissance, the effects of which extend to various aspects of life in Iraq, from the economy to culture and all the way to social stability.”
In the past months, meetings were held with representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, the Arab Tourism Organization and the Council of Arab Tourism Ministers to discuss the nomination of Baghdad as the Arab Tourism Capital.
