In recent years, Iraq has witnessed a significant increase in suicide cases, which has raised widespread concern among experts and civil society.
This increase is due to a combination of factors, including economic crises, ongoing conflicts, and increasing psychological pressures. Health and social authorities in Iraq warn that this trend indicates a mental health crisis that may require urgent and comprehensive interventions.
A security source reported today, Tuesday, that two young men, one male and the other female, committed suicide in two separate incidents in Baghdad, while an employee at Baghdad International Airport was arrested.
The source said, "A young woman, born in 2003, committed suicide by hanging herself using an electric wire hanging from the ceiling of her room in the Al-Amel neighborhood in Baghdad."
The source stated that "the young woman who committed suicide was a student in the College of Physical Education, and an investigation was opened with her family to determine the reasons for the suicide."
The source pointed out that “a young man born in 2008 also committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of cloth hanging from the ceiling fan inside his room in the Al-Hurriya area in Baghdad.”
In other news, the source indicated that “a security force arrested a civilian employee at Baghdad International Airport against whom an arrest warrant was issued under Article 160 and he is wanted by the Special Investigation Commission.”
The source stated that "the accused was found in possession of an amount of 70 thousand US dollars and 10 million Iraqi dinars," stressing that "the arrest warrant was executed within the municipalities area east of Baghdad."
Regarding the detained civil servant, the Baghdad Operations Command confirmed the arrest of one of the fugitives wanted for “extortion and bribery” crimes in the Rusafa side.
Baghdad Operations Media said in a statement that “in continuation of the security plan and intensification of intelligence efforts to pursue outlaws and organized crime elements and implement judicial arrest warrants, a joint force from the First Federal Police Division, with intelligence support, was able to arrest a fugitive accused according to a judicial arrest warrant within the provisions of Resolution (160) of 1983 (extortion and bribery).”
He explained that “the accused was found in possession of $7,000 and 10 million Iraqi dinars, after raiding and searching his house in the Al-Baladiyat area next to Al-Rusafa,” stressing that “the accused and the seized items were handed over to the competent authorities to complete the legal procedures against him.”
In turn, the head of the Anti-Narcotics Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, Adnan Al-Jahishi, said, “Drugs are the main factor in suicide cases in Iraq.”
Al-Jahishi added, “The main reason for suicides in Iraq, in my opinion, is the problem of drug abuse. There are many reasons for drug abuse, the most important of which are unemployment and poverty.”
In addition, the spokesman for the Iraqi Interior Ministry, Lieutenant Colonel Muqdad Miri, confirmed in a press conference, “Our security plans were successful and ongoing, and we even provide artistic and cultural activities for the residents of the Bataween area to keep them away from thinking about suicide. The Baghdad Municipality also provides services to them. The Bataween area is no longer what it used to be, and none of its residents are thinking about suicide. The value of real estate and rents there has also increased.”
The Iraqi Ministry of Health said, “Since the beginning of this year 2024, 291 suicide cases have been recorded in Iraq, in addition to thwarting dozens of suicide cases. The causes of suicide vary, most of which are emotional, economic, and other problems in society.”
