    Economy News - Baghdad
The Kurdistan Region Poultry Farms Association has decided to file a lawsuit before the Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) to prevent the flow of its products to the central and southern regions of the country.
The head of the association, Nazim Abdullah Al-Jaf, said in a statement on Friday that the federal government has been preventing the flow of our products to southern and central Iraq for several years due to the inability of the relevant authorities in the Kurdistan Regional Government to solve the problems, adding that they will file a complaint before the Federal Court next Sunday.
He added, "We ask the members of the Iraqi parliament who represent our voice and were elected by the Kurdistan Region to help and support us, just as a number of parliamentarians helped us in the past, and this time everyone must be with us to solve our problem."
Due to the very hot summer and the risk of diseases in poultry farms, the price of live chicken has dropped significantly in the Kurdistan Region, where the price of one kilogram in the market sometimes reaches less than 2,500 dinars, which has increased the complaints of the owners of these farms, especially after Baghdad’s decision to ban the marketing of chicken from the region to the rest of the Iraqi provinces.
Poultry farm owners say that the cost of producing one kilogram of live chicken until it enters the market reaches 2,500 Iraqi dinars.
The Iraqi Council of Ministers approved in a session held yesterday, Thursday, that the customs duties imposed on chicken cuts and products would be (25%), which were not previously included in the local product protection procedures, based on Cabinet Resolution (23154 of 2023), while maintaining the customs duties on frozen whole chicken at (25%) based on Cabinet Resolution (183 of 2022). This decision will be implemented after (60) working days from the date of its issuance, by all border crossings, including those in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
