Shafaq News/ The Turkmen component in the Kurdistan Region called, today, Tuesday, on the Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) to reject complaints related to the quota seats as well as the electoral law in the region.
This came during a press conference held by the Regional Minister for Component Affairs, Aydin Marouf, following his meeting today with civil society organizations of the Turkmen component in Erbil.
Marouf said during the conference that the meeting was held regarding complaints submitted to the Federal Supreme Court against the quota seats within the Kurdistan Parliament elections law.
He added that last week the court held a session on this subject on 10/11/2023, and the pronouncement of the ruling was postponed to 11/5/2023, stressing that the ruling on the quota and the election law had been postponed several times.
Marouf added that these complaints were submitted by political parties, and they wanted them to hold legislative elections in the region scheduled for the 25th of next February, in accordance with the 1992 law. At that time, there were 5 quota seats for Christians only, and the Turkmen were not included, which would deprive them of their seats. Participation in elections
He pointed out that, in the same complaints, there was a demand to distribute seats based on geography, and we reject these opinions completely because they harm the components, specifically the Turkmen.
The minister continued by saying that these complaints were submitted for political purposes, calling on the Federal Court to reject these complaints “because they relate to the privacy of the components, and proceeding with them will deprive the Turkmen of participating in the elections in the Kurdistan Region.”
