    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski affirmed, today, Saturday (September 7, 2024), her country's commitment to reducing air pollution in Iraq and around the world.
Romanowski said in a post on the "X" platform, followed by "Baghdad Today", that "on the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, we renew our commitment to reducing air pollution in Iraq and around the world."
“Through our partnership with the US Environmental Protection Agency for Air and Radiation, the US Embassy in Baghdad monitors air quality in Iraq to raise climate awareness,” she added.
Air pollution rates are increasing in Iraq despite repeated talk of government measures to reduce pollution, and the capital Baghdad, Basra Governorate in the south, and Nineveh Governorate in the north are the most affected. International environmental reports have ranked Iraq fifth among the countries most affected by climate change in the world.
Experts link the high levels of air pollution to a number of reasons, including war remnants, oil industries, and overcrowding. In a survey conducted by the Swiss air purifier manufacturer IQR in March, Iraq ranked second among the most polluted countries in the world, and the capital, Baghdad, ranked 13th among the world’s cities. The survey showed that “Iraq, which is inhabited by 43.5 million people, saw its air quality deteriorate to 80.1 micrograms of PM2.5 particles per cubic meter, down from 49.7 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021.”
In September last year, Iraq launched the National Initiative to Support Energy and Reduce Emissions, and an ISO Energy Team was formed, which includes quality departments in all government institutions, relevant civil society organizations, and tribes that manage energy, green spaces, and climate change programs.
The Iraqi Ministry of Environment had previously warned of the danger of rising levels of environmental pollution, but it did not provide a solution to the issue. The ministry confirmed that pollution includes air, water and soil, and it also indicated that air pollution results from oil extraction operations in several governorates, the large number of cars, and the failure of factories and plants near cities to adhere to environmental conservation measures.
