    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Baghdad Provincial Council revealed, today, Saturday (September 7, 2024), the reason for the presence of unlicensed warehouses for selling alcoholic beverages in the capital, despite the existence of a decision to ban these beverages.
Council member Nora Al-Jahishi told Baghdad Today, "There are escalating security campaigns to close down unlicensed alcoholic beverage stores in Baghdad, which violate the conditions for opening such stores, especially those close to residential areas."
She added, "Some liquor stores are not closed because they are licensed and have official approvals. There are also unlicensed stores that are still operating because they are protected by influential parties or because they pay bribes to keep operating. However, in return, there is great security interest in closing all of these unlicensed places."
Al-Jahishi explained that "we in the council are following up on this file because of its importance, and we support the security campaigns to close all unlicensed places, such as nightclubs and liquor stores, which have become a danger threatening Iraqi society."
It is noteworthy that the Baghdad Operations Command announced today, Monday (July 22, 2024), the closure of the "Washum" Center and stores selling alcoholic beverages in Baghdad .
The command said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", "A force from the First and Second Divisions/Police, in cooperation with detachments from the Economic Security Directorate, the Organized Crime Directorate, and the Tourist Security Directorate, was able to close an unofficial tattoo center company ."
She added: "A hall and seven illegal warehouses for selling alcoholic beverages were also seized, and 9 violators among their owners were arrested in the areas of Bismayah, Abu Nawas Street, Al-Adl, Al-Mansour and Chkok neighborhoods on both sides of Karkh and Rusafa ."
She confirmed that "the accused and the seized items were handed over to the competent authorities to complete the legal procedures against them ."
