Environmental and water expert Sinan Al-Hajjaj warned of water shortages, noting that “desalination of Euphrates water is an important issue in the context of environmental and water issues in the region.”
“With the increasing demand for fresh water in the region, due to population growth and climate change, desalination of the Euphrates could provide an alternative source of fresh water, helping to relieve pressure on existing water resources,” Hajjaj said.
He added, “The Euphrates water in some areas may be polluted or contain a high percentage of salts and minerals, and desalination can help improve the quality of the water, making it suitable for drinking and for agricultural and industrial uses.”
“Desalination can reduce the need to deplete natural freshwater resources such as rivers and lakes, which contributes to protecting the ecosystems associated with these resources,” Hajjaj explains.
He added, “Providing a sustainable source of water through desalination of the Euphrates can support economic and social development in the region, especially in areas suffering from water shortages.”
The environmental and water specialist continues, “Desalinating the Euphrates waters may be a joint solution that can encourage cooperation between neighboring countries in managing shared water resources in a sustainable and fair manner.”
Experts believe that desalination of Euphrates water is a strategic option to address water-related challenges in the region, and requires a comprehensive feasibility study that takes into account environmental, economic, and social aspects.
Earlier, the follow-up committee formed by the Council of Ministers announced that the completion rate of the Eastern Euphrates Drainage Project had reached 70 percent.
Committee member Najm Abdul Tarish said, “The salinity level has decreased from 14,000 parts per million to 2,000 parts per million, which has forced residents to rely on river water for drinking and agriculture.”
He pointed out that "the Prime Minister's interest helped overcome many of the obstacles facing the project, which will contribute to saving the Euphrates River from pollution."
He pointed out that “the work is close to completion, as its pace has increased, and the construction of the transformation stations has been completed, through the first outlet on the western Al-Shamiya drain, in addition to outlet No. (3) located on the eastern Euphrates drain.”
