    Economy News - Follow-up
France's Court of Auditors, which is responsible for identifying savings to bring the public deficit back to European level, has recommended cutting 100,000 jobs "gradually" in municipalities and regions.
With France's public deficit, which along with six other countries is subject to excessive deficit measures before the European Commission, expected to exceed 6 percent of GDP in 2024, the Court of Auditors noted in a report published Wednesday that "staff costs, which represent a quarter of local government spending, are experiencing continuous growth."
With the aim of saving 4.1 billion euros annually from 2030, the institution, which aims to verify the proper use of public money, recommends "gradually returning the workforce in societies to its levels at the beginning of 2010", i.e. "reducing 100,000 jobs" out of 2 million.
The proposal, which is likely to spark outrage and has been opposed by lawmakers, is in line with a plan by French President Emmanuel Macron, who in his 2017 election campaign platform suggested cutting 120,000 public sector jobs over five years but later abandoned it.
While Prime Minister Michel Barnier aims to reduce the public deficit to less than 3% of GDP by 2029, the Court of Auditors is specifically proposing “sharing procurement” between municipalities, which could save €5 billion a year.
