Minister of Trade: Iraq is food secure for a whole year

The first national forum for the private sector witnessed a consensus on the effective role of the sector in the process of economic development and building the national economy, and this can be seen by everyone in the long- and medium-term development plans. The Minister of Trade, Athir Al-Ghariri, stated on the sidelines of the forum that food security is secured for a whole year.
Al-Ghariri said that the ministry realizes the importance of the private sector and is working to involve it in formulating laws and policies in order to create an attractive business environment, explaining that the government's priorities are economic reform, developing the private sector, and establishing industrial, agricultural, and service projects. He pointed out that investment opportunities are promising and important and that the private sector is the main pillar in the sustainable development process, stressing that Iraq is capable of developing the capabilities of the private sector and can rise to global performance, and be effective in diversifying financial resources.
He pointed out that efforts to develop projects and create job opportunities by the private sector are an important step. As for the Governor of Baghdad, Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi, he said: We believe in the importance of the private sector and its effective role, and that it is a partner in sustainable development, and this has been constitutionally approved. He described the role of the private sector in development plans, their axes and objectives as extremely important, indicating that Baghdad Governorate believes that the private sector is a basic guarantee for achieving the requirements of the city of Baghdad, and that no matter how big the budget is, the city needs the role of the private sector.
The Executive Director of the Iraq Development Fund, Mohammed Al-Najjar, explained that developing the reality of the national economy actually requires the presence of the “private sector” and national companies capable of implementing important partnerships that lead to the implementation of projects in various sectors.
Al-Najjar pointed out that the volume of work in Iraq requires the presence of the private sector in the right place that puts the Iraqi economy on the right track that activates development steps. In turn, the Prime Minister’s Advisor, Hussein Flamerz, stressed that the public sector should support the private sector, and here the role of the Iraq Development Fund emerged in working to support the private sector, indicating that the matter requires amending some laws, pointing out that Iraqi youth are creative and can achieve success.
He said: The government program aims at the private sector, as facilitating procedures represents support for the private sector and providing an encouraging environment for its activity.
Ali Fakher Al-Sanafi, Chairman of the Iraqi and Arab Contractors Union, said: The Iraqi private sector has been able to develop its performance over the past years and has reached advanced levels.
He pointed out that Iraqi contracting companies are now able to take on any responsibilities in the field of project implementation in all sectors, indicating that the past years and openness to the world have created an accumulation of experiences for the Iraqi contractor and he is now able to accomplish work that rises to the level of international performance.
He urged all relevant institutions to provide the necessary support to the Iraqi contractor in light of the directives of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani aimed at developing the Iraqi private sector and giving it the required attention.
The Executive Director of the organizing company, Hisham Khaled Abbas, said: The Iraqi private sector represents the most important axis in the process of economic recovery that the country seeks, noting that the forum represents a step towards rapprochement between the private and public sectors and there is real integration between the two sides.
He added that the presence of an effective private sector capable of assuming the major responsibilities entrusted to it represents and reflects the capabilities of the private sector and the local effort in managing the joints of the national economy, which were constitutionally approved.
