    Economy News - Baghdad
Anbar Governorate announced, on Thursday, the details of the Western Desert Irrigation Project, while setting a date for its full completion, and confirmed the continuation of work to increase water pumping and reach the last border area.
The project manager, Ahmed Jaber Sabbar, said in a statement reported by the official news agency, and seen by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the Western Desert Irrigation Water Project was established in 1982, where it was initially established with a transmission pipe with a diameter of 800 mm from the Abu Tayban area in Ramadi to the Trebil border crossing, with a length of 450 kilometers along the expressway," indicating that "the project costs 24 billion dinars and is one of the important strategic projects that serve the country."
"The project is currently under maintenance after being subjected to terrorist attacks by ISIS criminal gangs, as the project's completion rate has currently reached 55%," Sabbar added, noting that "it is hoped that the project will be opened, water pumped into it, and final operation will be in early March 2025. Currently, the pumping is experimental for maintenance and has reached the Al-Sakkar area in Rutba, where the project serves the areas extending from Abu Tayban to the city of Al-Akba, Al-Muhammadi, Kilo 35, the entire Al-Wafa district and its affiliated towns, the village of Abu Al-Jir, the border crossings, Trebil, Al-Walid, Arar, the city of Rutba, and all the security forces present in the region. The main transmission pipeline is to the city of Rutba, and it is likely that an additional transmission pipeline will be supplied to the Al-Nukhaib district."
He added that "the maintenance phases include all stations, the first, second, third and fifth pumping stations, which is the main feeding station in the Abu Tayban area, which pumps to kilometer 70 to station B1, station B2 at kilometer 110, station B3 at kilometer 160, station B4 in the Al-Sakkar area and station B5 in the Al-Rutba area," noting that "we are in the maintenance phase after the pipeline was exposed to terrorist attacks."
He explained that "the project also serves areas where there are shepherds, as we provide them with candles along the line."
Regarding the violations, Sabbar explained, “The issue of violations is thorny because the area is desert and it is easy to encroach on the project. We are trying to remove the violations, as we conduct a campaign every period to remove the violations with the mayor of Rutba and the director of Al-Wafa district, who are also interested in the issue of violations, and this is in the interest of the citizen.”
He pointed out that "the project provided job opportunities for nearly 300 young people in all specializations, including graduates, technicians and workers."
Regarding the protection of the project at the present time, Sabbar pointed out that “the deployed emergency brigades and army units are responsible for protection until the concerned authorities are contacted to provide protection for this project because it is an important and dangerous project at the same time in the event that it is exposed to the risk of terrorist or criminal attacks and the spread of toxins in the project. The issue of chlorine is very important, as the concerned authorities will be contacted to provide protection.”
He explained that "the pumping rate is 1,500 cubic metres per hour at present, and after the completion of the Al-Wafa Water Project, the pumping rate will be 4,000 cubic metres per hour."
