The Ministry of Transport confirmed today, Friday, that the submerged tunnel is the basic seed for the development path, and while explaining its strategic importance for the port of Faw, it explained the reason for choosing the submerged tunnel instead of bridges.
Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi said during a press conference: "The immersed tunnel project in the port of Faw is one of the important infrastructure projects; as it will shorten the time, effort and cost from a distance of 200 kilometers to only 62 kilometers," noting that "the immersion process of the ten concrete pieces in the immersed tunnel reached a length of (1226) meters."
He explained that "the reasons that made the Ministry of Transport move towards building the immersed tunnel instead of bridges are related to the fact that the tunnel is safer than bridges, in addition to the fact that the soil of the Khor Al-Zubair Canal is suitable for building tunnels and not for building bridges, in addition to the fact that the marine pieces are high and require very high bridges, and therefore this constitutes a large economic cost," indicating that "if the bridges are built, the economic and oil ports of Khor Al-Zubair will stop working and will cause a great loss to Iraq, so the Council of Ministers' directions went towards building this tunnel that will link the Grand Faw Port to the development road after linking it to the international highway."
For his part, the Director General of the Iraqi Ports Company, Director of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said: "After the start of the process of opening the water to the submerged tunnel in the Grand Faw Port, the inspection and monitoring operations will begin, after which there will be a completion of the excavation in the section linking Umm Qasr and Al-Faw to start transferring the ten blocks and placing them in their place, and the connection process will begin until the tunnel length of (2444) meters is completed."
He added, "The approaches in the tunnel form (28) pieces for each side, while the length of the approaches is (600) meters," indicating, "When the approaches meet with the length of the tunnel, they form the total length that will connect the Faw and Umm Qasr sides via the road linking the entrance to Al-Faw and the city of Safwan."
He pointed out that "the materials that were lifted from the excavations and the clay amounted to (85) million cubic meters, and it was planned to lift (110) tons of clay."
In turn, the Director of Media and Relations at the Ministry of Transport, Maitham Al-Safi, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The submerged tunnel consists of ten concrete pieces. The General Company for Iraqi Ports, through specialized international companies, worked to build these pieces inside the construction basin as a first step," adding that "the concrete pieces were submerged, which when connected together will be (1226) meters long for the submerged part in the water out of (2444) with the entrances that will form the submerged tunnel."
He explained that "this project is one of the infrastructure projects for the Grand Faw Port, which will be linked to the development road passing through the Zubair Canal, and it is the first of its kind in the Middle East," noting that "the project will save time, effort and cost."
Al-Safi pointed out that, “the water has begun to be opened in the submerged tunnel basin, in order to submerge the ten concrete blocks that have been completed and prepared for submersion inside the Zubair Canal, and that these blocks will undergo inspection and testing within two months, after which they will be floated piece by piece to be transferred to the designated place, which is the trench that will be completed in conjunction with the readiness of these pieces for the floating process,” indicating that, “the submerged part will be formed to connect the two banks of the Khor Al-Zubair Canal from the Umm Qasr side to the Al-Faw side.”
He added, "After the tunnel is completed, there will be a completion of the road linking the port of Al-Faw towards the city of Safwan via the submerged tunnel, then it enters via two bridges," noting that "the completion rate of the first bridge has reached 98% and the second 96%."
In terms of praising the Grand Faw Port project, MP Murtada Al-Saadi, head of the parliamentary State Support Alliance, said in a post on the X platform - followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) - that "after a series of government successes achieved on the path to Iraq's renaissance and prosperity and reaching advanced stages in the field of development at all levels, the government of Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has accomplished an important achievement with great economic feasibility (the Grand Faw Port)," noting that "the opening of the first phase of the five docks and the docking of ships in it is a step in the right direction that will contribute to diversifying the economy and providing job opportunities."
He explained that "the project, in terms of total capacity, is the largest in the region and is considered a serious result of the government's work in economic diversification and benefiting from the natural resources that the country possesses and transforming them into resources that support Iraq and accelerate its prosperity and advancement."
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani confirmed yesterday, Thursday, that the five docks represent the backbone of the Faw Port, while indicating that the development path will be an artery linking most countries in the region.
The Prime Minister's Media Office stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sponsored the ceremony of receiving the five berths of the Grand Faw Port in Basra Governorate, and their actual entry into operation, after they were completed by the implementing Korean company."
The Prime Minister pointed out - in a speech during the ceremony of receiving the five berths of the Grand Faw Port - to "the importance of the five berths in the Grand Faw Port, as they represent the backbone of the port project in its first phase, which will be completed next year according to the previous timetables, and huge commercial ships with large drafts have already docked on the port's berths."
He explained that "this project has actually entered into the knots and paths of global trade and transport routes, which pass through the Middle East region of great strategic importance for global trade, and it is the most prominent water basin in the world, in which energy, trade, communication and exchange activities are concentrated in all their forms, and it will also contribute to transforming Iraq from a country in need of other people's ports, to a maritime country overlooking the Gulf with a complete view."
