    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Independent MP Jawad Al-Yassari confirmed, today, Thursday (November 7, 2024), that he is waiting to set a session to vote on the controversial laws during the coming week.
The leftist told Baghdad Today: "The House of Representatives has not yet set a session to vote on the controversial laws that have been postponed since previous sessions, and we hope to set this session next week to decide on the vote on those laws, especially after Parliament has passed the issue of electing the new president."
He added, "All political differences regarding any law can be resolved and agreed upon, as long as there is dialogue and not any intersection between the political blocs and parties," noting that "the agreement on these laws may be during the next week, after which a decisive session will be set to vote on these laws."
    Repeated allegations of neglect
The House of Representatives, in its current session and the previous three sessions, faces accusations of repeated negligence in completing the vote on dozens of important laws that affect the lives of citizens.
These laws include those related to important economic files, the distribution of wealth, freedom of expression, general amnesty, and personal status by postponing these laws to later sessions, for reasons that can be summed up as differences between parties, in addition to the fact that some of these laws do not conform to the interests of different political parties and factions, according to observers.
No guarantees for passing controversial laws
Independent MP Ahmed Al-Sharmani, for his part, confirms that there are no guarantees to pass the controversial postponed laws during today's parliament session.
Al-Sharmani told Baghdad Today on Tuesday (October 29, 2024), "Disagreements are still ongoing between the blocs and political parties regarding the controversial laws, which are (the Personal Status Law, the General Amnesty Law, and the Real Estate Recovery Law), as they face objections from various blocs, including independent representatives and emerging forces."
He added, "The Presidency of the House of Representatives included these laws on the agenda without any guarantees that they will be passed during the session, and there is no political agreement on them yet. It is possible that understandings will be reached at the last minute before the session, and all possibilities are open, and they may be passed according to the one-basket deal if a prior political consensus is reached."
No rules in the presence of "disputes"
Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani confirmed, after his election to the position last Thursday, that the controversial laws will be put to a unanimous vote, away from political disputes that may hinder the legislative process.
Al-Mashhadani said in a statement to the official newspaper, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the controversial laws will not be presented, except after an in-depth study with all parliamentary blocs, and they will be presented unanimously at least, so that there will be no disputes or obstruction of some laws."
The Speaker of the House of Representatives added that "the way the controversial law was presented to the session, in the presence of disputes, is incorrect and does not serve the Parliament."
