Shafaq News/ The Kurdistan Men's Union revealed on Friday that 129,000 divorce cases have been recorded over the past 13 years. While it warned that the rise in divorce cases threatens to "collapse" society, it believed that polygamy might be one of the solutions to restore balance.
The union's spokesman, Burhan Ali Faraj, told Shafak News Agency, "The Kurdistan Region recorded 129,000 divorce cases from 2010 to 2023, which highlights major challenges facing family stability. This exposes the Kurdish family to the risk of collapse, which puts society in front of increasing challenges."
He added, "Polygamy may be a solution to restore balance to families affected by divorce," adding, "We do not oppose polygamy or support it, but we see it as a necessity for the Kurdistan society under these circumstances."
Faraj also called for "amending the Personal Status Law adopted by the Iraqi Parliament to reflect current social changes," expressing his categorical rejection of underage marriage.
He stressed the "necessity of setting a marriage age between 20 and 25 years for girls, and 25 and 30 years for boys, to ensure that the stages of growth and maturity necessary for this age group are passed."
Regarding the women’s “quota” system, Faraj expressed his rejection of this system, saying: “I am against the women’s quota because it is unfair to men. Women are present in society and in all forums, and the quota should be allocated to minorities, and women are not minorities.”
Burhan Ali Faraj's statement comes amid a significant increase in divorce rates in the Kurdistan Region, with the number of registered cases reaching 129,000 between 2010 and 2023, raising growing concerns about the future of family and social stability in the region.
This situation highlights repeated calls to study possible solutions to deal with the effects of divorce on families and society, including the possibility of resorting to polygamy as an option to confront the repercussions of this phenomenon.
At the same time, this statement renews the debate on the need to amend the Personal Status Law in Iraq, to keep pace with the current social changes in Kurdish society, with a focus on preventing the marriage of minors and setting the age of marriage in line with the stages of growth and maturity.
The issue of women’s “quotas” adds another dimension to the controversy, as opinions such as those put forward by Faraj express a position rejecting the “quota” system as “unjustified discrimination against men,” calling for it to be allocated only to minorities, and stressing that women are not considered a minority in society.
