Al-Sudani meets with a member of the US House of Representatives on October 10
Members of the Iraqi parliament and political observers praised the “proactive steps” taken by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to stop the war in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon and prevent Iraq and the countries of the region from slipping into it, by holding intensive meetings, especially with the ambassadors of the major countries (America, Russia and China).
The Foreign Relations Committee of the Iraqi Parliament confirms that “the committee aligns with and is in line with the general policy led by Al-Sudani to create a position that distances Iraq from what is happening around it and protects Iraq’s capabilities and elements of strength, which are represented by the position of the supreme authority, the Iraqi government, the armed forces, popular cohesion, and political forces, from any aggression or targeting.”
Committee member Abbas Al-Jubouri added, “Creating a political position through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government led by Al-Sudani is a correct step, and there is also movement by the House of Representatives in this endeavor, as the acting Speaker of the House of Representatives met with the ambassadors of the European Union and others, and the entire government, with its legislative and governmental branches, is cohesive in creating a position of strength for Iraq.”
Ongoing movement to stop the war
Iraqi government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi confirmed today, Thursday, that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani's meetings with ambassadors of several countries come within the framework of his ongoing efforts to stop the war in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
Al-Awadi said in a post on the “X” platform: “The Prime Minister’s meetings today with three ambassadors of major countries (America, Russia and China) come as a continuous link within his ongoing movement to stop the Gaza and Lebanon war, prevent its expansion and maintain the stability of Iraq and the region.”
He added, "The Prime Minister spoke frankly about the importance of activating the two positions (Chinese and Russian) and raising them to the level of the crisis in mobilizing the institutions of the international community and restoring their role in deterring aggression, preserving international peace, preventing the targeting of civilians, and activating the mechanisms of relief programs for war victims."
He pointed out that "the Prime Minister asked his guests, the ambassadors of the permanent member states of the United Nations, to take positions against those from some extremist media outlets who dared to attack the position of the supreme religious authority."
Iraq and the region cannot tolerate escalation
For his part, the Iraqi parliament member, Ali Nima Al-Bandawi, says, “The situation in Iraq and the region cannot tolerate escalation, so it is necessary to hold discussions not only at the level of ambassadors and foreign ministers, but also at the international level in order to protect the region and prevent it from being dragged into incidents that lead to wars.”
Al-Bandawi pointed out during his speech that “Iraq plays a major role, especially in the recent period, in bringing viewpoints closer together even among Arab countries, due to its acceptance at the Arab level and even at the regional and international levels.”
Proactive steps
The Prime Minister’s move to meet with the ambassadors of the permanent members of the Security Council (Russia, China and America) is “a step forward and a step towards productive diplomacy aimed at achieving stability in the Middle East, especially since we are talking about the features of a new Middle East that Netanyahu spoke about after the events of October 7,” according to political analyst Saif Al-Saadi.
Al-Saadi added, “Therefore, the Prime Minister is taking proactive steps to prevent the slide of Iraq and the countries of the region as well, which have an impact on Iraq and the Middle East region as a whole, especially in light of the existence of veiled threats that may affect the religious authority in Iraq and elected figures and targets within the country.”
Al-Saadi confirms that “Al-Sudani’s talk with the ambassadors of the permanent member states of the Security Council may affect its decisions, whether to stop the ceasefire in Gaza or not to expand the flames of war, so the Prime Minister’s step is positive towards stopping the escalation in the region.”
Movement to defuse the crisis
This is also emphasized by the political analyst, Abbas Al-Jubouri, who says, “Iraq always distances itself from the policy of axes, and I believe that Iraq can today play a major role in pulling the fuse of the crisis from the region through the meetings that Al-Sudani is holding with ambassadors and officials such as Russia, China, Iran and some countries to calm the situation.”
Al-Jubouri warns in an interview that “if the situation continues as it is now, Iraq will be affected by it, as well as the neighboring regional countries, so Iraq wants to play a major role in restoring balance to this region through these relations.”
An important but late step
In contrast, political analyst Ahmed Al-Yasiri believes that “Iraq’s foreign policy under Al-Sudani’s government is the weakest among previous governments, and this is because Al-Sudani focused on internal policies, supporting the middle classes, trying to achieve internal reconciliation, and breaking the internal political deadlock.”
Al-Yasiri added, “Despite the importance of all of this (domestic policies), it was reflected in the external political performance, so his external initiatives were less than the internal initiatives, and this matter was reflected in Iraq in this regional crisis.”
He continued, "Iraq was supposed, since the beginning of the events in Gaza, to place its foreign policies within the Arab axis, but Iraq's position came after the Arab League, and its policy was based on issuing statements only without taking positions with allies, so Al-Sudani's recent move is important and good, but it is late."
Al-Yasiri believes that “Al-Sudani’s government does not have the ability to produce an initiative to resolve the crisis, but rather Al-Sudani is waiting for the Coordination Framework meeting and takes the initiative after the Framework authorizes him to do so, and this is a mistake, because the Framework is a parliamentary bloc and not an executive government, and the one who initiates initiatives is the government and not parliamentary blocs, and this is what is causing Al-Sudani problems.”
He stressed that "what is required of Al-Sudani is to take a stance greater than these stances, by urgently calling for an Arab summit, especially Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, the Emirates and Egypt, to take a joint stance and activate security agreements with them to block the road in light of the Israeli threats to target Iraq."
