    Economy News - Follow-up
The Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran says that the iPhone registration problem has been solved.
Sattar Hashemi did not provide further details on Wednesday, November 9, but wrote on the X social network that with the approval of the government council and the lifting of the ban, “details and regulations regarding the import of iPhones will be announced in the shortest possible time.”
Iranian authorities banned imports of iPhone 14 and newer models last year, but imports of iPhone 13 and older models continued due to high demand. The ban has caused prices of older iPhones to soar on the black market.
The release of the iPhone 14 registry means lifting the import ban and requires government and parliamentary approval.
The ban on importing new generations of smartphones, especially the iPhone, has not only led to a significant increase in the prices of older models of Apple phones, but has also deprived citizens of using the latest models freely available in the world.
In July 2019, Iranian government agencies announced that phones worth more than 300 euros are registered as luxury goods, and accordingly, the import of flagship mobile phones and some mid-range mobile phones into Iran has been stopped.
In this context, the spokesman for the Central Headquarters for Combating Smuggling of Goods and Currency announced on August 30 that the antennas of iPhone 14 and 15 devices in Iran had begun to be cut off.
He announced that despite the ban on importing these phones and their lack of registration, “one million iPhone 14 and 15 devices receive antennas in Iran.”
The 14 and 15 series models available in the market, which have entered the country unofficially, allow users to use the phone's antenna for one month per SIM card.
At the same time, the Iranian Cabinet has set the commercial profit for importing “any type” of iPhone-branded mobile phones at 96% in the decree on the tariff for importing and registering iPhones.
Currently, the regular iPhone 16 with 256GB memory is priced by Apple in the US market at $800. Imposing a 96% trade markup in Iran will raise the price of this product to $1,568 for importers.
