Al-Mashhadani to the 188 Alliance delegation: The best solution is to give people the freedom to choose their personal status

Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani said on Wednesday that “the best solution regarding amending the Personal Status Law is to leave people free to choose their personal status.”
A statement from the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives stated that Al-Mashhadani “received a delegation from the 188 Alliance headed by MP Sarwa Abdul Wahid, who presented their views and objections regarding the amendment of the Personal Status Law, which included legal proposals and others of a social nature.”
For his part, Al-Mashhadani said: “The current law has objections from some segments of society, just as the 188 Alliance has objections to the amendments, and therefore there are differences of opinion about whether to continue working on it or to amend it.”
Al-Mashhadani stressed that “the doors are open to study all opinions and proposals,” indicating that “the ideal solution is to leave people free to choose their personal status between working according to the current law or according to the new amendment that includes attached codes.”
Controversy has escalated over the draft amendment to the Personal Status Law, and the proposed amendments have sparked widespread anger in civil society circles amid accusations that they are against women’s rights and even legalize underage marriage.
It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives completed, on Monday (August 16, 2024), the second reading of the proposed law amending Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959.
For some time now, Iraqi circles have been witnessing an escalation in discussions and the presentation of religious and civil opinions and ideas alike, regarding the amendment of Law 188 of 1959 on Iraqi personal status, which has shown beyond doubt the division of the country into two lines with no third, “religious and civil.”
