Oil Licenses in Basra: An Environmental Disaster That Raises Cancer Rates and Suffocates the Population

Environmental experts reported that oil licenses in Basra Governorate have caused serious environmental degradation, leading to an increase in cancer and respiratory diseases among the local population.
They pointed out that the emission of toxic gases from oil fields and the lack of environmental measures have led to widespread air and water pollution, which poses a major threat to the health of society.
Environmental specialist, Mohammed Harith, explained that “oil extraction and processing operations directly contribute to air and water pollution, as large quantities of toxic gases and chemicals, such as sulfur dioxide and hydrocarbon compounds, are emitted.”
He stressed that "this pollution has led to an increase in the spread of cancer and respiratory diseases in areas adjacent to the oil fields."
The expert added that “the weakness of oversight of industrial activities and the absence of appropriate environmental measures exacerbated the environmental crisis in Basra, as pollution is concentrated in residential areas and significantly affects the health of the population.”
The expert called for “the necessity of adopting strict environmental policies and obligating oil companies to follow environmental standards to reduce harm to the local community.”
For his part, the representative of Basra Governorate, Ali Al-Mashkoor, attributed the high rates of epidemic and cancerous diseases in Basra to the effects of previous oil licensing rounds.
He pointed out that these tours contributed to the exacerbation of environmental pollution, which directly affects the health of citizens in the governorate, calling on the concerned authorities to take urgent measures to reduce health risks.
Al-Mashkoor said, “Oil extraction operations within the fifth licensing rounds resulted in massive pollution within Basra Governorate.”
He added, "The environmental safety contracting requirements were ignored in the licensing rounds, but the Ministry of Oil took into consideration the environmental requirements in Basra."
He explained that "Basra Governorate is exposed to pollution due to oil extractions, stressing that previous licensing rounds caused many diseases in Basra."
In addition, Ali Al-Mayahy, a member of the Doctors Syndicate in the province, criticized the neglect of the environmental pollution file in the province and the weakness of health procedures.
Al-Mayahy said, “There are no real treatments for environmental pollution, and we have not seen any clear action from the central and local governments.”
He warned that "what is more dangerous than that is the weak health aspect, which needs great attention, the establishment of new centers, and the provision of sufficient treatments to treat patients."
He pointed out that “patients pay the price of neglecting the pollution and health files with their health and their money, and this cannot continue,” calling on the local government to “put in place a clear plan to address the health and environmental files.”
The Basra Cancer Center had warned of the increasing number of cancer cases among citizens in Basra, indicating that the number of cases is increasing by 10% annually.
Over the past four years, Iraq has ranked second in the world among the countries that burn the highest amounts of natural gas, according to international reports that confirmed its danger to the lives of the population due to the dangerous emissions.
