Anderson perfect in return as Senators blank Islanders

Craig Anderson told Guy Boucher he was good to go, and was he ever. Making his first start in over two month, Anderson was perfect in making 33 saves for the shutout and pacing the Senators to a much needed 3-0 win over the red hot New York Islanders.

Also give credit to the Senators team in front of him, forcing most of the shots from low quality scoring areas and clearing any rebounds when they were there. Also, the duo of Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Tom Pyatt did a fantastic job in containing the Islanders top line centred by John Tavares. That duo also combined for the Senators' third goal, one that was not a shorthanded goal as the Ottawa penalty had just expired but might as well have been, as Pyatt fed Pageau for his first goal in 11 games.

Tavares, who is the pace-setter for the Islanders, was held off the scoresheet, was -2 with three shots on goal.

Mark Stone opened the scoring just over 4 minutes into the game, for the second game in a row scoring from behind the opposing goal line. After getting a wraparound past Kari Lehtonen for the winner after a Cody Ceci shot went wide on Thursday, this time it was an Erik Karlsson shot that flubbed and missed the target. Stone was in the right spot, and this time he banked it in off Thomas Greiss' skate for his 20th goal of the season and what would turn out to be his second consecutive game winner.

The Islanders carried the play for most of the second period, but Ottawa scored on consecutive shots, both in transition. Kyle Turris found Zack Smith driving the net and the winger made a nice move on Greiss at full speed for his 13th of the season, and then Pyatt and Pageau combined for their goal less than three minutes later to round out the scoring.

Guy Boucher changed up his lines, and in going with 7 defensemen again there were all sorts of new combinations. Moving Bobby Ryan down in the lineup might have been a tough call considering he is the highest paid forward on the club, but right now he is not doing much of anything. He played 16:33, and had a blank statline save for a giveaway and a faceoff win. He didn't even have a shot attempt let alone a shot on goal.

But this one was all about Anderson, and his triumphant return following a tough time personally. Following his two month absence and then two week minicamp, he should be fresh and focused for the stretch run and won't be overworked because they have a more than capable backup in Mike Condon, who saved the Senators season and kept them in a positive playoff standing in Anderson's absence.

The Senators were also helped on the out of town scoreboard as losses by the Leafs and Canadiens were to the Senators' benefit. Well, sort of, because I am not sure the Senators would benefit by finishing first in the Atlantic and having to play the first wildcard playoff team, which looks like it will be one of the Rangers, Penguins or Blue Jackets. They are six points behind the Habs with four games in and, and a fifth will come today as they face the Bruins. If Ottawa can maintain second in the Atlantic they will likely face one of Toronto, Boston or Florida, none of which are a gimme, but look to be an easier matchup than the fourth place Metro division team.

That is a long way away, and the Senators next task will be to make up for a lackluster effort last week in Buffalo when they host the Sabres on Tuesday night. It will be a Valentine's Day matchup and the Senators will need to find a way to get some love from Robin Lehner, who has had their number almost every time he has faced them since Ottawa traded him to the Sabres a couple of summers ago.
