Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghji expressed his hope that the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Tehran would reduce tension in the region.
"Japan may be able to make the Americans aware of the current situation," he said in an interview with a Japanese channel, expressing his hope that Abe's visit to Tehran would ease "tension in the region."
He welcomed the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister to Tehran, adding that Abe "will meet next week with Iranian officials," led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
"Iran did not want a third party to intervene as an intermediary between it and Washington," he said, while the Japanese channel considered Iraqi comments as a welcome by Tehran to mediate between Iran and the United States.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Tehran on June 12-14, the first visit by a Japanese prime minister to Iran since 1978 to meet with President Hassan Rowhani on June 12 and Supreme Leader Khamenei on July 13, Kyodo news agency reported.
