The Australian government on Monday proposed amendments to laws that would allow the Australian military to deploy more quickly in response to "terrorist incidents" inside the country.
The government said in a statement that the police force remains the best in the initial response to such events, but the army can offer additional support to strengthen its capabilities.
"The main thing we need is the most flexible arrangements possible," Justice Minister Michael Kennan told Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "Threats have changed very dramatically," Reuters reported.
Under the proposed legal amendments, the government, and state-level governments, will be able to summon military assistance before responding to an incident that goes beyond the capabilities of the police force.
"What we want to do is make sure we work with the police and then use whatever they can, including the Australian Defense Forces," Kennan said.
The government said the proposed legal amendments were the result of the first review of the role of the military in fighting terrorism inside since 2005.
Australia has seen a series of "individual wolf attacks" inspired by radical groups, prompting the authorities to review the practices of police, state authorities and federal authorities.
