US President Donald Trump has urged his Mexican counterpart Pena Netto to refrain from publicly disclosing his country's insistence on not paying for the construction of a wall called Trump on the border between the two countries, the Washington Post reported.
President Trump rebuked the Mexican president for publicly condemning the construction of the wall in a telephone conversation on January 27, the proceedings of the Washington Post reported.
"You can not say that to the press," Trump told his Mexican counterpart.
The newspaper also published Trump's first telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Trump built his election campaign on a promise to build a wall along the South American border to prevent the flow of immigrants into the United States, and pledged to force Mexico to pay for the project.
But the facts published by the Washington Post confirm that Trump had admitted at the time that the project would be financed from other sources. "We will arrive at a formula in a way," he said.
"If you say that Mexico will not pay for the construction of the wall, I will never meet you because I can not afford it."
Trump told the Mexican president that the border wall "is the least important thing we can discuss, but it may be the most important politically."
